Hello all,
Code:
I am a 23 year old guy. About 2 years ago I was studying in Europe and visited Prague for a weekend. I went to a club with some other guys and they all encouraged me to have sex with a prostitute there. I did, and soon after I became so very ashamed and depressed. In a way, however, I look at that night as a blessing beacuse since then, I have not had sex and have committed myself to not do so unitl I am married. It made me realize that sacredness of sex and also how it is not to be used. After repenting, I have felt closer to God ever since.
A few days ago I found out about HPV and how it can be spread even when using condoms. I do not have any other STDs and feel perfectly healthy, but there is no way to test for HPV in men. I dont know what to do. I have always dreamed of getting married and having children, but now I fear I may have this virus and could pass it on to my future wife or children. Would it be immoral of me to ever get married?

At the very least, you should only marry a girl who was given the Gardasil vaccination when she was younger.

No, it would not be immoral of you to get married, as long as you fully disclosed your sexual history (and fears of sexually transmitted disease) with your wife before you married. Let her assess the risk for herself.

The bottom line is that HPV is so common, that anyone who isn’t a virgin on their wedding night (or anyone who has been raped) could be infected and not know it. According to the CPC, many times HPV clears on its own:
There is no treatment for the virus itself, but a healthy immune system can usually fight off HPV naturally.

Have any of you felt a little "funny: about the process of giving this injection to your daughters. As I and my wife are expecting this thought came up for me. I wouldn’t want to give my daughter the idea that this injection make somehow makes sex before marriage OK for them- or acknowledges that I am in some way, realizing that she will do this.

I think that I will just have her take the injection and just not say what it is for. .

I did not get this for my daughter. The testing was not adequate. There are side effects including death. It is too new. It only prevents a small population of HPV’s . Not worth it . At least at this time.

I don’t think that the vac will give them the message that it’s OK to have sex. No more so than the bombardment of messages they receive thanks to popular culture. I think we have to raise them right, keep the lines of communication open, model good behavior and pray they make good choices. I think taking a very active role in our children’s lives is an excellent preventative measure and will hopefully override any messages from society - VAC or otherwise. But ultimately, they will make their own choices.

I wouldn’t want to risk their health but not giving it. Look at this young man (the OP) who made a mistake and has totally repented. As a parent, if I could avoid HPV and the threat of cancer on top of the painful lesson he has learned, I would.

I am raising good girls. I trust them and would not feel comfortable keeping their medical history including which vacs they’ve been given from them.

And you may be right - I don’t know because I haven’t researched it at all and my girls are still young. I am leary of new VACs in gerneral and I want to give it time. My point in my previous post was that IF I felt it were a good VAC and I chose to give it, I would not keep that knowledge from my girls because I don’t think giving the vac necessarily sends the message that premarital sex is OK.

That was the only point I was trying to make.

Back to the OP ~ No, I don’t think you need to refrain from getting married. I do think you need to share your history though. We all make mistakes… the important thing is you learned from yours. God bless you.

I hope you ditched those friends.

Gardasil is insufficiently tested and has caused an unduly large number of deaths … so I would never get it or have a daughter get it.

HPV is not usually life-threatening, and you don’t even know you have it, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. Keep an eye out for symptoms, and be forthright with a potential spouse (don’t mention it on the first date, but do bring it up long before you plan to propose), and there should not be any problem. I don’t think I would have a problem marrying someone in that situation.

sheilathebard, I appreciate your response. But even if I am honest with a potential spouse about my past and they accept it and want to marry me, am i not still accountable in God’s eyes if potential cancer should arise? this is what I am concerned about.

Then you go to Confession and repent- that’s how the Church works.

Actually that wouldn’t really be a sin as you were honest- I’m not sure of your problem.

Or after marriage, for that matter. The virus doesn’t look for a wedding ring before deciding whether to infect a person.

No, but two virgins who marry each other and remain faithful to each other until death they do part will never get it (or any other STD, for that matter).

I guess that means the OP is destined for a lifetime of remaining single because of his one mistake.

And in your example, both of the parties need to avoid being raped until they die as well.

That’s what Confession is for. Pre-marital sex is hardly specific to our modern times.

In the Church we have Christ’s wonderful gift of absolution- I don’t know where I would be without this mercy.

Our sins are but specks in the Sun of Christ’s mercy.

I was referring to nine year old girls receiving Gardasil; not to the OP.

This is a great question! I have posted about these worries before because you can’t really protect yourself especially when you don’t know the other person’s history real well

Oooops my post got cut off!

This is a great question! I have posted about these worries before because you can’t really protect yourself especially when you don’t know the other person’s history real well. So you have to be honest with them, no sidestepping or sugarcoating. What I know of HPV so far, and this is by studying and by having medics in the family is that there are different types of HPV, it’s true, there is no real way of knowing whether you are a guy and have it or gave it off. There is one form of HPV that shows genital wart-like symptoms, not sure which, but you would have known that by now.

Like someone already said if you remain celibate for a few years after that, it could just go away, but I do not necessarily know whether or not it can lie dormant and then reappear. Best to find a great doctor who knows their stuff with this, medicine advances daily, there may be a fix for this or even a test made for men who are carriers, who knows? Tomorrow is another new day!

As far as Gardasil, I don’t know much about it, never had to inquire about this or had a need for it so far. I don’t know if it protects against all the strains or the one you may or may not have, but there might be no problem if the person you are with understands and is willing to take the vaccination. Some questions to ask about this are: How long does this vaccine last? Were there side effects affiliated with this?
Hope this helps a bit.

We cannot give medical advice on here, so like I stated, please talk to a medical professional about this! No you can’t just call up and ask, You have to make an appointment, you have to physically show up, and just talk to the Doctor, but if you are like me, I always say I need to come in because of shortness of breath, which is not a lie, but I am am uneasy about specifying to the admin why I have to come there, I dislike the admin, but Id follow my doc anywhere!

ah yes, confession, i forgot.
Confession and sinning no more. Then of course being honest with a potential spouse. Keep up on the medical reports about HPV. Get checked out by a doctor and learn symptoms etc. Don’t let the fact that everyone says there is no test stop you from getting checked.

About Gardasil:

lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/nov/08111803.html

Earlier this year, Judicial Watch, a non-profit watchdog group, listed 21 deaths and 9749 “adverse reactions” linked to Gardasil, including 78 outbreaks of genital warts and 10 miscarriages. Judicial Watch uncovered documents through the Freedom of Information Act that show the FDA received reports of 10 deaths associated with Gardasil since September 2007, and 140 “serious” reports of adverse reactions, including 27 “life threatening” cases, 10 spontaneous abortions, and 6 cases of the debilitating Guillain-Barre Syndrome since January 2008.
