My parish (in a large city) does not have a priest available for mass on Fridays because that is the pastor’s day off. So we have a ritual without a priest on Fridays. Today it was a nun who presided.
I thought priest’s had to say daily mass. I know everyone needs a day off but I have considered priesthood as answering a call from God, and would expect that he would go above the normal call of duty to serve mass for the faithful everyday if need be. Am I being unmerciful in my expectation. I am so disappointed that our church has reached this point due to the secularism of our society. Hence, a reduction in true vocations. Today I felt that I may as well attend the local Baptist Church, if mass is not being done.
I appreciate someone else’s (name removed by moderator)ut since I am so conflicted.

Dear friend,

I can sympathize with you in wanting to attend daily Mass. Feeling like attending a Baptist church instead doesn’t make much sense if you value the Mass as you seem to do. I would suggest attending Mass at another Catholic Church on that day. Parish priests work hard. Unlike many Protestant clergy, they can be called at any time of day or night to anoint a dying person—and many times are, especially if there is a hospital in the parish.
When I was a pastor, I had two other priests who worked in the parish, but I would always celebrate an early Mass on my day off. But your priest may need rest more than I did.
