What do I do about this test?

I was taking a test over a book I had not read. It was an open books test, but still difficult to find the answers in the book. I did not finish the test in class along with some other students, and the teacher told us we could finish it next class. Would it be cheating if I read Sparknotes over the book before next time. I figured it would not be cheating if I read the book myself, but I don’t have the time. I will have to read the Sparknotes after the test anyway so I can write a paper over it, and it seemed to make more sense to go ahead and read it so I could avoid failing the test. What do you think? If it is wrong would it be a mortal sin or venial. I don’t care very much about my test grade. I just want to avoid the embarrassment of failing a test. Thanks for the advice.

The teacher knows full well you have the opportunity to get brushed up on the book. Reading a summary is perfectly fine, just hope the test doesnt ask for more detail than the summary provides. That isnt cheating.

The only time I would think cheating was a mortal sin is if you copied off of someone for a significant test or manually changed your grade in the gradebook.

is there some reason you can’t just read the assigned book, or as much of it as you can? do you really think the notes will take the place of the book itself? bad habit which is going to cause problems all through your academic life. tip for students: open book tests are always harder and always require more study and preparation. If you are writing an academic paper using the published notes rather than the book itself and published research and original sources, you are not doing an academic paper, and should take a course on how to do academic research and writing next semester.
