I am not an expert but from what I understand, Buddhists do not worship Buddha but that doesn’t mean that they don’t come together (temple) to worship. Buddhists are followers of Buddha and see him as an example to follow. He has attained fullfillment and others hope to someday do the same. What is the purpose of Buddist monasteries and temples if not to worship?
The Catholic equivalent might be Franciscans who do not worship St. Francis but join in common spiritual practices. Franciscans strive to be like St. Francis and since he is a saint, he has attained what we hope for.
My experience with Buddhist monasteries is that they are often similar to Catholic seminaries. They are places where men remove themselves from the world in order to delve more deeply into thier faith. Sometimes this is permanent but it may also be temporary.
