My in-laws visit us frequently since my wife and I have had kids and we visit them often as well. My kids adore their grandparents. My kids are 9 (daughter) and 5 (son).
My wife and I are serious about our faith and are practicing Catholics. We are raising our children in the faith of course. My mother-in-law is very devout but my father-in-law no longer practices his Catholic faith. He has not done so since before my wife and I even met. My wife tells me that growing up he would go to Mass with her family but she never remembered him ever taking part in the Sacraments.
We make it a priority to attend weekly Mass and holy days of obligation. My father-in-law will not attend Mass with us. The notable exceptions were; our wedding, my kids Baptisms and my daughter’s First Holy Communion. My wife and I have extended invitations to him to come with us to no avail.
Now that my kids are older they are asking why grandpa does not go to Mass with us? I find the situation a bit awkward as I don’t know what to tell them. I don’t want to make their grandpa look bad in their eyes. My father-in-law will not give a reason why he doesn’t go except to say, " there is nothing there for me."
Any advice anyone?
