What do main stream protestants and catholics have in common?

By all means look for common ground but please don’t pretend the differences don’t matter.
You’re right of course, the differences do matter. I never meant to imply that they did not. But I also stand by my original statement, that the size of the gulf between us is not justified by those very real differences on the specific issues. That’s not to say that the specific beliefs aren’t important. Our beliefs define our faith and end up changing us greatly. I just think we humans are prone to dividing more than is warranted, probably motivated by pride…
 
Thanks to both of you and I agree with both. My thought is that emphasizing the similarities helps our protestant friends realize how Christian we are. For example, they do not realize that ½ of the Mass is reading scripture, not only scripture but how the old and new testament correspond. It helps them see our deep love of Christ. That is important for our eventual unification as Christ desires.
