And how will his successor be chosen?

I believe, as an RCIA student who knows nothing (LOL) that he will be given a chance in Purgatory to see and understand the Truth. Even Hitler and Judas himself had the same chance.

What do Mormons believe?

I just want to make a correction. Purgatory is not a second chance at salvation. It is a place of cleansing for those who have been judged and are without mortal sin, but still have venial sins and/or the temporal punishment due for sin.

Hitler and Judas may be in purgatory only if they repented before death. According to Church teaching, Hinkley may, or may not, be saved, but only God knows.

But to answer your original question, I’m sure Mormons believe he has been saved and is in the Mormon idea of heaven.

They don’t know. They say he will be judged at some point and be placed in one of three kingdoms based upon his worthiness. It will be left up to God’s judgment. If God judges that he deserves it, he will be in the Celestial Kingdom and be on his way to Godhood.

That is of course unless he received his second anointing. In which case he’s assured of his exaltation.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_anointing

And given he was the man responsible for authorizing them I’d bet the farm that he did have his second anointing. Though the general LDS population knows nothing about the second anointing so Bart’s statement would be correct from the average LDS point of view.

If you’re interested in reading what happens during the ceremony there’s a personal experience on the exmormon.org/boards/w-agora/index.php?site=exmobb&bn=exmobb_recovery bulletin board by the poster “anointed one” dated January 21st.

I forgot about the second anointing. You are absolutely right. He may be guaranteed Godhood according to Mormon belief.

I have no idea what Mormons think will happen to Gordon Hinkley. I suppose they believe he will be reunited with his wife and they will recieve thier elevation to godhood.

However your concept of purgatory is WAY off base, purgatory is not a second chance. All in purgatory are saved in Christ and Heaven bound there is only one way to go once in purgatory, those that die outside of God’s Grace are damned to hell, not allowed into purgatory for a “second chance”, only the saved are in purgatory, it is a place of suffering where we suffer the temporal punishment for our sins adn lose attachment to sin so we can be perfect and enter Heaven. And unless Hitler had a perfect act of contrition on his death bed he is most certainly in hell, Judas killed himself, an act that can’t allow for repentance so while I can’t say 100% he is in hell, odds are…

Hitler also killed himself. While objectively it may seem that they are both damned, we can never know what, if anything, transpired between them and God at the moment of death. Even a suicide may be granted a moment of clarity in which to repent between the time when the bullet hits the brain (or whatever method) and the soul leaves the body.

Maybe, maybe not, his body has never been found so that is impossible to be certain of, but I understand your point nevertheless.

As someone already stated, your idea of purgatory is wrong. Everyone in purgatory is going to Heaven sooner or later. Your idea is actually closer to the Mormon concept of the afterlife for non-mormons (when they are baptized on behalf of a dead person, they believe that the gospel will be preached to that person, and they are given the chance to repent, or something like that)

Wow. Thanks for correcting me. I truly ask for mercy for having erred.

(trying not to be too sensitive, but I am pregnant and feel condescended to quite easily).

I was just curious what they believed. That’s all. Sorry.

Yes, lets do put Gordon B. Hinckley in the same category as Judas and Hitler. What a wonderful comparison! Thank you. Gordon B. Hinckley led a good life, attempting to be righteous and doing the work of god. He will be awarded well in catholic heaven and also in Mormon heaven. It makes no difference on Heaven’s definition, he will be there.

The successor will probably be Thomas S. Monson, the leader of the Qurom of Twelve Apostles, if all goes according to plan.

No need to appologise for asking a question. Congrats on the baby!

BY the way, lots of Cradle Catholics don’t understand purgatory, or many other things.

Most of what that story contains can be gleaned from the internet. It could be true or false in terms of if the poster actually experienced what he experienced. I have been discussing that thread on a different forum and I brought up a main point:

The poster posts the procedure in great detail and then announces at the end of the story that he left the lds church because of ‘true science’, which of course had nothing to do with the second anointing story at all. This left me feeling a little dubious about his story. Now of course I have no idea what exactly is true science.

Also, I must also claim, that many could leave the catholic faith over ‘true science’ too, whatever true science may be.

The second anointing was discussed in the Joseph Smith biography ‘Rough Stone Rolling’ by Richard Lyman Bushman. I see no problem with it, especially since Bushman quoted Bible verses that were known to JS. Unfortunately I do not have the book with me.

However, it is nice to see someone on the exmormon site believe in ‘true science’ and leave his faith because of it and in so doing tell of a sacred mormon ritual in the process.

I think that the Russians found his body. At least, I believe that they have his skull in their archives if I am not mistaken.

I don’t think she meant anything by it, I think you’re reading too much into it, I think it was a sincere question.

To the OP I wasn’t condescending to you, but your idea of purgatory is what we hear from evangelicals, it’s their misudnerstanding that leads them to rail against Catholics. Sorry if it came off the wrong way.

You are probably right but I cannot be sure so I had to say something. There can some misunderstanding if all three names are in the same post, possibly going to a similiar place.

Well God willing I hope to be in purgatory that means I made it. Purgatory isn’t a bad place and I’m nearly certain Hitler and Judas aren’t there. I have no idea if Gordon Hinkley is there or not, how God deals with those outside the Catholic Church we don’t know. The OP was just mistaken as to what purgatory is and isn’t. It isn’t a “second chance”, only those saved are in purgatory, those damned are in hell for eternity. All in purgatory recieve salvation just some as through fire. Corinthians 3:15 explains it better than I can.

And what’s your point? Yes, much of what he says can be found in other websites and he even makes that specific statement. It is however the only record I’ve seen (not saying I’ve seen them all) from a first person perspective, all the other’s are portrayed as being second hand.

Why does it leave you dubious? The poster never started from the position of the 2nd anointing being relevant to his leaving. He merely shared the story at the request of others on that board. He makes no statement that this should be a reason why someone should leave. And even if he did why would that make you dubious? Is it impossible for a person to have more than one reason to leave the LDS faith? Or for those reason to not have the same weight in their opinion? I can not vouch for the poster, for all I know he could be full of manure to the point his eyes are brown. However it does not contradict the information that you have said is available, nor does it have anything that I would consider out of the ordinary, no metaphysical shift in reality, or miraculous event. So on the face there is nothing that would make me believe he was lying. As for checking up on the veracity of the poster I’ll leave that up to someone who has access to records I don’t. I take it at face value for I have no reason not to.
Now of course I have no idea what exactly is true science. Also, I must also claim, that many could leave the catholic faith over ‘true science’ too, whatever true science may be.
Not sure what your trying to say here. True science would be science that follows the scientific method and not simply unfounded untested assertions. Specifically that the Native Americans are the primary descendants of the tribe of Nephi which the LDS church asserts despite reams of scientific evidence to the contrary. As for Catholics leaving the Church based on true science I’m sure you’re quite right. People leave the Church for many reasons. However that does not mean that their decision is the right one given the available information.
However, it is nice to see someone on the exmormon site believe in ‘true science’ and leave his faith because of it and in so doing tell of a sacred mormon ritual in the process.
Never thought I could “hear” sarcasm dripping from a post. Why is it that LDS always make the equation sacred = secret? Especially with regards to the temple? It’s not like the purpose of the real temple was a secret. Ask any Jew what the temple was for and he’ll direct you to the book of Deuteronomy and the book of Leviticus which spells out exactly what was going on in the temple.

True science would claim that we all came from monkeys and that god does not exist. They site scientific evidence to support their claim. Do you believe in true science or only in selective true science?
