What do Protestants think about 2Peter 1:20-21

My guess would be that they personally interpret it. How can they not when most are not subject to the authority of any visible institution?? See Acts Chapter 8 versus 30-35. When one pulls the bible out of its resting place it basically falls apart…30,000 different denominations attests to that…teachccd:)
The way it was written is the way I see it. The eunuch needed an interpreter…the Holy Spirit provided one…Philip told him the truth about Jesus and the eunuch’s response was no different than the men on the Day of Pentecost…and the eunuch didn’t even recite “the Sinner’s Prayer” 🤷

Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” :amen:

The Bible warns that there would be those who would corrupt the word of God (2 Corinthians 2:17) and handle it deceitfully (2 Corinthians 4:2). There would arise false gospels with false epistles (2 Thessalonians 2:2), along with false prophets and teachers who would not only bring in damnable heresies but would seek to make merchandise of the true believer through their own feigned words (2 Peter 2:1-3).

It did not take long for this to occur. In the days of the Apostles, and shortly afterwards, several doctrinal heresies arose. Their early beginnings are referred to in the New Testament in such places as Galatians 1:6-8; 1 John 4:3; 2 John 1:7; and Jude 1:3-4. They not only plagued the early Church, but are still with us today, in modern form, in many contemporary Christian cults. These false doctrines influenced the transmission of scripture and account for some of the differences in the line of manuscripts.

“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

If I am to live by “every word of God”, then I need an EVERY WORD Bible.

I didn’t mean this to sound rude, I apologize if I did. You are right in what you said, that there are Protestants out there who will interpret the Bible to fit their needs. But not all of us do that. That’s all. 😊

Okay…and thanks. No offense taken in the slightest.

Right. The 1611 KJV actually had the full 46 OT books as well as the 27 NT books, which were the Canon of Scripture that was ratified by the councils at Hippo (393), Carthage (397, 419), II Nicea (787), Florence (1442), and Trent (1546).

Did you know that they were in the first ever printed Guttenberg Bible, which was printed a century **before **the Council of Trent, which many Protestants mistakenly believe was when the Catholic Church was supposed to have added them?

Did you also know that Martin Luther included the Deuterocanonical books in his first German translation? It wasn’t until later that he removed them despite John’s warning: **“I warn every one who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book” **(Rev. 22:18). But then, Luther also wanted to remove the Epistle of James and the Book of Revelation.

ignorant and unstable people are easier to spot than you think.

Peter goes on to describe them, as does Jude.

First he describes, healthy christians,

2 Peter 1

3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But** if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. **

10Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

elsewhere he describes the unstable and ignorant,

2 Peter 2
False Teachers and Their Destruction

1But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. **They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord **who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,[a] putting them into gloomy dungeons[0] to be held for judgment; 5if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— 9if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.[c] **10This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature[d] and despise authority. **
Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings; 11yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord. 12But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.

13They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.[e] 14With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood! 15They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness. 16But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—a beast without speech—who spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

17These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 20If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”[f]and, “A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.”

Jude 1:4For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. **They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. **

Matthew 24:24
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.

How could you not spot the ignorant and unstable?

Apparently it is not that easy for the common man to see than you think. The leaders of many, not all mind you, Protestant Churches today are ignorant and unstable.

Everything you mentioned can be found today…
**
**They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord **
who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.

Denying the soveriegn Lord:

Found in Mormonism. They deny Christ is the 2nd person of the trinity. They also teach that every true believer(in there religion) will one day become gods.

JW’s also deny Christ as God, his death on the cross, as well as the trinity.

Found in Islam. (those Jewish and Catholic converts were blind to the ignorance and the unstable mind of the false prophet Mohammed.

Destructive heresies:
  • Saved by faith alone.
  • Denying the need to be baptized.
  • Denying the Real Presence in the Eucharist.
  • Allowing divorce.
  • Allowing contraception.
  • Allowing Abortion.
  • Denying the holy orders.
  • Denying scripture (Deuteronical books)
  • Denying Sacred Tradition (II thess 2:15)
    **
**They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. **
**

Once Saved Always Saved doctrine. Truly believe in Christ once and only once in your life then you can become a genocidal monster and still find salvation.
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.

4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them

This verse can be applied to many “faith healers” found in many evangelical circles today. As well as other religious leaders that parade stories of people being miraculously healed or filled with some devine purpose(whether or not they be true) in order to get donations to there ministries. And let us not forget about the “The Prosperity doctrine.”

i’m confused. i see this kind of reasoning used against protestants but when i look for an infallible interpretation of the scriptures from the catholic church i find none. Catholics are in the same boat as protestants when it comes to interpreting the Bible.
The Catholic Church does not infalliably declared what every verse of the Bible to be. However, she does give us guidlines. Believe whatever you want about this vers as long as it does not contradict Dogma, Doctrine or some other devine truth revealed to us through Christ or teaching on faith and morals set by his Church.

The Church guides and gaurds the truth. Interpreting it with Sacred Tradition. With the authority to chastise those who enbrace or teach heresy.

eunuch needed an interpreter

Out of curiousity was the eunuch reading from hebrew or greek?

Probably Aramaic based on the Eunuch’s homeland location since the Jews used this language extensively after Babylonian captivity. Although, it could also have been either the Greek version or the Hebrew (although the Hebrew version was not widely used by Jesus’ time). I suppose it matters, but Philip still “preached to him Jesus.” 🤷

First off, an atheist would not ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit while reading the Bible. Right? Right.

Secondly, I am not saying that everyone’s personal interpretation of the Bible is correct. But the Holy Spirit does and will aid us in interpreting the Bible, and we should take full advantage of that, especially in our private devotions.
There are many atheist that come to a belief in God. They don’t start out by seeking God.

Ah, the problem is that every Christian who reads the Bible believes they are guided by their interpretation of the Bible. So, what happens when you have 2 or more Christians that have completely different interpretations of the Bible? Are they all guided by the Holy Spirit? How do you decide who has the correct interpretation?

(20) Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, (21) for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the Holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.

It attacks private interpretation of the Bible. If I’m correct isn’t private interpretation often used in Protestantism?

Sorry if I’m sounding polemical here. It struck me as surprising when I saw it.
A couple of possibilities come to mind:

a) You shouldn’t even bother reading 2 Peter 1:20-21. Any meaning you may or may not get out of putting together those 42 English words in your mind would be your own private interpretation of what Peter was trying to get across in that sentence. Why are we even discussing those verses?

b) Who does that Pope guy think he is by trying to tell us his personal interpretation of Scripture is right.

c) Scripture is not there for individuals to read into it what they want.

The drawback to the scripture is that it tells you who isn’t qualified to interpret scripture, but doesn’t explain who IS.

I would imagine that if the Bible said that the Pope has that right, then the problem would be solved.

That is not the problem. The problem is without an authority everyone feels they have the right to interpret Scripture anyway they want to. Look at the divisions with in Christianity today. They all believe they are following the Bible and they all believe something different.

Scripture does explain who is in authority. However, that doesn’t mean that everyone is going to agree with that authority. Look at Moses, there were Israelites who did not agree with him and challenged his authority. Never mind that God was the one that actually chose him. It’s no different today.

Based on this self interpretation logic, those who are illiterate are doomed because they cannot interpret Scripture for themselves.

How is it they are supposed to listen to various preachers of the Gospel and follow their interpretations (as it is in the third world these days), and not the Church? Wouldn’t I, as an ignorant illiterate trust the 2,000 yr. old interpretations of a universal church that ushered in civilization and practically invented widespread literacy over one man’s opinion?

I know of a couple that actually entrap Latinos by offering help, then preaching them out of the Church. Oh, you don’t have to listen to the Church, but you darned well listen to them, boy or boy, or you can go take a flying leap. I say this as one who had to rescue just such a person dumped because she wouldn’t fall for such nonsense.

No, I’ll take the Apostles’ and Church Fathers’ interpretation over Ernest Angley’s or Jimmy Swaggart’s any day. I certainly know better than to trust my OWN judgement. Haven’t any of you the same sense? :dts:
