The names are completely different. Satan is Hebrew, and means “adversary” or “opponent” was originally applied to an angel whose role in God’s court is to accuse man. It did not necessarily mean an evil being, but any one whose purpose is to oppose or accuse someone, and so the term originally included angels in the service of God.

Lucifer is Latin, and means “light-bearer”, and originally refers to the planet Venus, which is very bright and precedes the sun during the dawn. It was applied in the Latin Vulgate to the king of Babylon in Isaiah 14. Later, during medieval times, Lucifer somehow became equated with Satan based on this passage, perhaps because Jesus’ similar-sounding statement describing Satan fall from heaven like lightning.

Lucifer was used by St. Jerome for the Hebrew word “Helel” which means “Bright One” or “Shining One”. Most modern translations have it as “Day Star” or “Morning Star” which isn’t what the Hebrew says. Which is why I personally prefer Lucifer in that context. “Light-bearer” is alot closer to the Hebrew than “day star” or “morning star”.

And yes I believe that Lucifer is indeed Satan.

What Satan and Lucifer have in common is that both do not exist. Satan or Lucifer is but a metaphorical inllustration for the evil inclination in man. They never existed as a being. They are fabrications of Christianity in order to keep those who don’t have a mind of their own under control.

I can hardly wait! I wonder what it could be besides banning me again. If it’s so, it only shows that one in this forum is not allowed to express his beliefs with the purpose to learn other’s opinions.

 Do you belive that there are evil spirits? If not what are people seeing? Do you believe in God? If so isnt he a spirit? And if there is a spirit world there must be good and bad ones? What do you think? Nancy:)

Your profile says you are Jewish. However, I don’t think the above was/is the traditional Jewish teaching. I’m not sure how closely Jewish teaching conforms to Catholic.

In Catholic teaching, Satan/Lucifer is a fallen angel - a created spiritual being, not a god. He has been allowed certain powers by God. He is evil.

What is traditional Jewish teaching?

You really have side-stepped the issue and the argument entirely to forward your own opinions, and essentially you are creating an atmospher in which idea dispersal, which you speak of in a later post, can no longer be done in productive and calm way. This is not the appropriate forum for that discussion. Thus, I tell you to practice what you preach.

Secondly, you give no logical argument for what you speak of, so obviously you will be a target for those who, as it were, know their stuff. You seem to understand that there is good and not good, which we call evil. Now that understanding opens the door for many, many posibilities. That view is not exclusive, but rather affirms the Christian ideology. I’m sorry to tell you, friend, but you are more of a Christian than you think.

That’s exactly what I am after: Those who know their stuff to give me some answers. What I understand so far is that, according to Ecclesiastes 7:29, the Almighty created man perfect but he - man - degenerated by using his freewill to do evil. Therefore, good exists because it was created by God. But evil does not exist. Man has to make it as he ill-uses his freewill.

In Judaism there is no such a thing as a fallen angel. The idea of a fallen angel in the Prophets is an allegoric metaphor when the Prophet talks about a powerful King that comes down from power and looses his Kingdom. One cannot read a prophecy and get stuck to the letter as if the meaning is literal.

No, I don’t believe in supernatural evil spirits. We
are the ones when we choose to be the ones. What people are saying is fabricated in their own imaginations. I do believe in God and yes, He is pure spirit as Jesus himself said in John 4:24. Besides, God is incorporeal and carries none of the anthropomorphic attributes you guys think of Him. There is no spirit world. God is One and Only. Before we are born and after we die, there is no good-and-bad but only good. Good-and-bad only while we are here. Now, you have what I think. But I can change my mind with your help.

I assume that this applies to all angels. There are so many in the scriptures. Moses comes to mind. Are your views that of the Jewish people or are there other views as well?

Angels are emanations. Do you understand what
I mean by emanations? Influences, that what they are. Angels are not beings. My views are the same as of the Jewish People. You can read the book “Guide for the Perplexed” by Moses Maimonides, a Jewish Philosopher and Theologian.

No I don’t know what you mean. Emanation means to come from a source so the influence is from G-D? Than why were these sources named? Seems odd to name an influence.

But what is the traditional Jewish teaching as to who Satan is?

Edit note: Never mind. I decided to check out the Jewish Encyclopedia. The article does not agree with what you are saying.
