What do the patristics say about the treasury of merit?

I am currently on the fence, between Catholicism and Protestantism. I am attending RCIA, but my teacher isn’t very educated on the topic, so I figured that I’d ask the experts:

What Patristic evidence do we have of the Treasury of merit? From doing some online research, I have learned that Alexander of Hales formulated the doctrine and Clement VI dogmatically set forth the doctrine in his bull “Unigenitus”.

This really is a struggle for me, and I hope you guys that help me out.
