What do the people at the Vatican do for fun?

Pope John Paul II, when he was younger, would sneak away to go skiing or hiking in the mountains.
In the winter of 1981, the pope, his secretary and two of his Polish aides decided to make a “getaway” to the mountains from the papal villa in Castel Gandolfo.
They packed into a car owned by one of the priests, in order not to raise suspicions, and when they passed the Swiss Guard post one prelate opened wide a newspaper to hide the pontiff in the back seat.
Then they drove to the central Italian ski town of Ovindoli without an escort, winding through mountain towns and carefully respecting the speed limits.
Once they arrived, they chose a deserted slope and the pope was able to ski all day long. On the way back, the pope smiled and said, “We did it!” It was the first of many such escapes, the papal secretary said.

He did this more than 100 times, dressing as other skiers or hikers, and almost always no one noticed him. :o

Surely he should work on quitting the smoking thing…
Opinions vary widely on that, whoever is doing the smoking.

If he’s allergic and it makes him feel awful, I think he should quit.

If’s there no ill effects and it’s not hurting him, more power to him, I say.

The Pope smokes and drinks?

Television. do you think maybe he has a certain show that he dvr’s? 😛

Kidding. But he might. Whose to say he doesn’t have a certain show he watches?
Apparently he watches the news on television in order to relax. But he also enjoys playing the piano, although rarely gets the chance.

Orange Fanta is his favorite treat. :o

Like most smokers, he probably does at least try to quit from time to time. At his age he’s probably been a smoker for a very long time so 'tain’t so easy.
How, exactly, does one tell someone who’s lived through WWII that smoking is bad for your health?

Giving up smoking is easy… my dad did it all the time 🙂

His dad quit at 72… and lived to be 97.

I’m pretty sure the same as anywhere else in the world - socialize, debate, discuss, eat, drink, smoke, read, study (learning is the greatest recreation), pray, watch television and film.
Roger that. Google [nuns having fun] and click on the Images tab.

I wonder what his favorite movie is
I don’t know if Benedict smokes, but I’m sure they all drink (it’s Italy, excuse the stereotype, but in most of the non-Muslim world, men drink with dinner, and he’s a German, so, Oktoberfest), but John XXIII most definitely smoked like a chimney.

He even likes wine, too. With orange Fanta. At the same meal

o.O

Pope Benedict XVI has a very good taste in beverages. 🙂
Also, I even found Papal beer. 🙂

Also, is it true that Blessed John XXIII was a fan of ice cream? o:

It doesn’t matter who is smoking. Cigarettes are bad for everyone. They are extremely unhealthy.

And so is homosexuality. And false religion. And salt. And whiskey. I’m a celibate smoker; it comes down to liberty, when smoking is involved. There’s more involved in life than the “fitness”-weight-drinking-smoking police’s version of “health”. Do I have the right to inflict second-hand smoke on other individuals? No. But, is smoking inherently disordered? No. Inherently immoral? No. It’s morally neutral. Even the saints realized that there’s more to life than following government edicts on “healthfulness”.

Even from the health perspective, what of those forms of smoking (i.e. cigar and pipe) that have minimal-to-nil effect on health?

As unhealthy as cigarettes are - and they are, as you state, very unhealthy, in the dictionary sense of the term, not in the exaggerated sense it seems to be being used - they’re not nearly as unhealthy as the government statistics make them out to be. (Japan has the highest rates of smoking in the First World/West/Developed World by far, and also by far the greatest longevity.) I learned how they were compiled, at least in part, when someone I knew died of a heart attack. In the hospital, the physician asked:

“Was he a smoker?”
“No.”
“Did he ever smoke?”
“Yes.”
“When did he smoke?”
“When he was younger.”
“How long did he smoke?”
“A few years.”
“Ballpark it for me.”
“He smoked from the time he was 11 or 12 until he was 20 something, I think.”
“That means his heart attack was caused by smoking.”

And thus the death by heart attack was recorded for statistical purposes as smoking-caused. He was 59 years old, and hadn’t smoked in at least 30 years.

^ Khalid, you should not defend cancer sticks. They are bad for you, the government is not just exaggerating or making it up.

Believe it or not, they are harmful to your health. I think the right thing for any smoker to do would be to try and quit.

Your opinion is duly noted. Thank you.

I remember reading that; I also pictured him skiing in his full vestments.:rotfl:
One time I saw an editorial cartoon of John Paul II skiing down a mountain in full papal regalia, and the caption said,

‘TALK ABOUT THE ‘SCHUSS’ OF THE FISHERMAN!’ ‘schuss’ is a play on words, instead of ‘shoes’]

I thought it was funny then, and it’s funny now. 😃 :rotfl:

I can’t believe there are still people out there who don’t know cigarettes are bad for you.

An opinion?

LOL
Yes, an opinion. George Burns lived to be 100, and he smoked constantly.

My dad died of emphysema because he was allergic to the cigarettes he smoked.

The level of impact smoking has on a person’s health is going to vary, based on person to person.

Also, “LOL” is not an effective argument, in any situation.

Back to the topic.

Just because some people live to be old from it does not mean that its not bad for you.

The ingredients in those cancer sticks are terrible. If you really think its not doing any damage to your body, you are wrong. It is not an opinion, it is true.

They do damage to all parts of your body whether you want to believe it or not. Get your head out of the clouds.

And don’t bother responding. Its a dead argument. I know cigarettes are bad for you. they might not KILL everyone on time, but if you smoked them forever, they eventually would. Even one cigarette can hurt your body in someway or another. bit by bit, they start to cause serious damage over time.

And I’d watch what you say.

I dare you to go tell the thousands of people laying in hospital beds due to smoking who are now dying and tell them “cigarettes aren’t bad for you”.

I’m sure they’d have a lot to educate you on.

What about the millions of people who have died from cigarettes? Oh still, not enough proof for you that they are damaging to the human body?

All the smokers I’ve spoke to said that starting smoking was the dumbest decision they ever made, and I agree with them.

Really, you’re just asking for death by putting those disgusting cancer sticks in your body.

And by saying they’re not bad for you. Go into a hospital, I bet you’ll find at least 1 person who is in there due to smoking.

Just because one person lived a long life on smoking doesnt mean it didn’t do any damage. I bet your George Burns who smoked all his life, if he had an autopsy done, youll see his lungs were black compared to a healthy lung. Is that not considered damage? Or would his lung look perfectly good to you?

How can you be so blind to think cigarettes are harmless and don’t do damage? Really? How can you possibly think that? Unbelievable.

You really want to see what smoking can do? Go search “dangers of smoking” on google, and click on images. No, they are not friendly, but maybe they will wake you up.

These are not little pieces of candy, they are full of poisons, and cancer causing ingredients.
