What do the pictures on the Ignatius Catholic study Bible mean?

They’re traditional iconic representations for the four evangelists: angel (Matthew), lion (Mark), ox (Luke), and eagle (John). The figure in the center, of course, is Christ. 😉
 
Oh cool thank you so much! Now I know. How come they’re associated with those symbols?
 
The images are based on the description of the four living creatures around the throne of God, mentioned in Revelation 4:6-8, and the four living creatures (cherubim) around the throne of God, mentioned in Ezekiel, chapters 1 and 10.

The earliest association I have seen of the four evangelists or the four Gospels with the four living creatures is in St Irenaeus’ Against Heresies (book 3; chapter 11; paragraph 8), written about A.D. 189.
