I thought this might be fun. I could be wrong. 😉

Anyway - how many songs out there have you wondered what the heck the artist was talking about in their lyrics? This is a place to ask those age old questions and hopefully get some (interesting) answers.

Some help finding lyrics:
Use links to lyrics instead of posting the entire song here if possible.

Here are some sites to help you:

Ok - I’ll start:

Macarthur Park - by Andy Williams

“MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again”

What the heck is this all about? 😃
Any ideas? Any other songs you have always wondered about?

While Andy Williams may have sung it, it was released in my senior year in high school and it was sung by Richard Harris who was 38 when it came out in 1968.

It no doubt had something to do with the protests ongoing in Los Angeles in 1968.

Take a gander at some of the song titles from 1968. Say: White Room by Cream

I’m glad I discovered classical music and Celtic music the year before. Anyone for The Unicorn one of the top 100 for 1968?

I’ve never known that’s what that those lyrics were, and have probably been singing along all these years without a clue!! 😛 I do have to say that I love this line though: “…in this place where the shadows run from themselves.”

Macarthur’s Park however seems to be a love song - I just don’t get the melting cake in the rain. 🤷

Song Lyrics & Words

Bing Crosby sang this one frequently.

I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake
Goofy as a goon and silly as a loon
Some call it pretty, others call it crazy
But they all sing this tune:
Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?
Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?
If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing “Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy”
Oh! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?

Dogs eat bugs and birds eat bugs.
And little owls eat liver.
A kid will eat liver too, wouldn’t you.
