What do we do with last year's palms?

What is the proper way to dispose of the palms received last year?
 
The palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday can be returned to the parish to be burned and used as ashes for Ash Wednesday.

If that is not able to be done, then the palm should be burned and the resulting ashes buried/spread.
