What do we know about the Holy Spirit?

After the most recent Church shooting, and taking into consideration ISIS, I have been thinking about a lack of Holy Spirit in non-Christians. Would anyone like to share any knowledge or just offer up a comment on this?

I thought we received the Holy Spirit when we are confirmed. Does this mean only confirmed Catholics have the Holy Spirit sealed in them? I’m not sure.

But Atheists and other religious people, such as Muslims, reject the existence of the H.S. -they don’t believe

…To me, that explains why there is so much bloodshed in the Middle East, and why mass murderers tend to never be faithful Christians who attend Church weekly.

In fact, I can’t think of a single mass murderer who ever existed, who expressed true Christian faith and attended church weekly. Has there ever been one?

IOW, I don’t think it’s possible for the faithful to commit mass murder. I think the gravity of that sin is beyond what the H.S. will allow. Though, I do think less grave sins are possible to commit, even with the Holy Spirit, such as sins of a sexual nature.

We receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism and Confirmation. But the Holy Spirit is a gentle guest, he does not take over the person and keep them from doing something that is immoral. He has a gentle voice and nudges only gently. Serious sin is still a human possibility and will lead to the Holy Spirit being completely evicted from our soul. Hitler and Stalin were both baptized, for example.

Not really… we receive the Holy Spirit when Baptized. Confirmation strengthens the Holy Spirit in us, but it’s not the sole source.

to learn more about The Holy Spirit, I would highly suggest you want the series on The Holy Spirit called: The Wild Goose is Loose. You can watch it on FORMED.org or at https://thewildgooseisloose.com/series-segments.

For Spanish speakers, you can watch it here: El Ganso Salvaje — THE MINISTRY OF THE WILD GOOSE

God Bless

The Holy Spirit is God, and is God not among us all? Even those who reject him and follow evil? I think the Holy Spirit exists in everyone, but it’s rather the individuals choice to receive or reject what he says. I’d also say that He exists within other religions too. Granted, they don’t see it that way. I am a firm Catholic believer, and I do think Catholicism is correct, but I don’t necessarily reject that other religions can have the same feeling/affect that the Holy Spirit gives Christians. Just not to the extent as we feel it.

And yes, there have been mass blood sheds that even Catholics were apart of. Looking back closer to the Roman empire for one example. The crusades (I believe…? maybe its a different war period) believed they were doing God’s will. They weren’t actually expressing true christian value, but they thought they were.

I understand what you mean, but I think some of your reasoning isn’t all correct, or maybe just doesn’t quite make sense? Not sure what I am trying to say because I get what you are speaking of, just not… how? I liked Jamal’s answer. If that helps understand what i mean.

Im pretty sure Hitler was baptized Catholic and therefore would have had the Holy Spirit in him at some point. I think a Confirmed Catholic could commit mass murders.

Hi Lonnie!

So, would I be safe in assuming that the Holy Spirit, existing in our conscience, is the “small, quiet voice” that, at least for me, “tells” me things (guidance) that I wouldn’t say to myself?

Thanks

I agree. That’s why it has to be true * faith* that draws us to the Holy Spirit. I’ve never heard of a faithful Catholic, who attends Mass weekly, committing mass murder.

…I’ve never heard of any truly faithful Christian committing mass murder.

There must be a connection between christian faith and the H.S.

The Holy Spirit is present in all grace that is given, which includes actual graces even before conversion, and sacramental grace which brings or increases the state of sanctifying grace. The individual must cooperate with the grace for it to be efficacious.

Good points Vico. I even heard somewhere once that the Holy Spirit was a particularly special agent during the Creative Act, and that the Spirit is what animates life itself, as life is indeed a grace of God’s.

…But there’s something special about Christians who believe. They tend to not commit the most heinous sins such as the mass murder of innocent random people. That would be beyond what a good Christian could do.

Sorry guys if I’m being a little repetative, it’s just that I’m a little taken back by what went on in that Church. I heard that the gunman actually unloaded rounds into crying babies, and even walked up and down the aisles checking for movement… If he saw anyone move, he would shoot them several more times regardless of anything. No mercy.

Such cold heartedness shows a complete rejection of the Holy Spirit, and the gunman was an Atheist. So…

Then there’s stuff like this from the following link that makes me think that the rejection of tge Holy Spirit is a very serious matter worth exploring deeper.

Have you considered that it is not the Holy Spirit which made him do the thing he did but the Evil Spirit?

@Reuben_J,

I hadn’t thought of it actually. But how then do we explain ISIS, when they have strong faith in God, pray 5 times a day, and then go out and saw off a head or two, and kill children themselves.

How does the Evil Spirit enter so easily into those faithful people, but not Christians unless it’s the rejection of the Holy Spirit that is the problem. Because as you probably know, Muslims reject the H.S. because they believe it contradicts the singularity of God.

John 16:8-11
“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”

John 14:26
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

And Christ has said:

John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Christ, The Father, God is about helping ‘persons/people’ get into The Kingdom of God and into the Kingdom of Heaven. NOT about sending them in the opposite direction.

Please pay no attention nor give any heed to any who speaks of how God desires for wrong doers to go to ‘hell’.

God and many humans would rather see a person rehabilitated before seeing them be sent to their ‘chambers’
