What do we respond to in the TLM?

I go to a beautiful high mass every sunday but am confused as to which parts I respond to. The choir sings beautifully and I’m not sure if we’re allowed? to sing along as well, or should it just be the choir? Also, the “Et cum spiritu tuo” should be regular parishioners too right? It seems that a lot of the parishioners don’t respond to much, it could be confusion on their part if their new, but I’m new too so I am :confused: as well? 🙂
 
I think a lot of this is local customs. Where we go to the TLM, most but not all folks respond to the “et cum spiritu tuo”. Most of the responses are said by the Altar boys. When the priest says/sings the Pater Noster we can respond with the choir, “sed libera nos a malo” with the Altar boys.

During a High Mass or Missa Cantata, there may be a processional hymn which the congregation sings with the choir. And again at the Recessional. Other than that let the choir sing the chant. Although I know folks that have great voices, most people can’t do chant correctly. But there is no law that says you can’t try.

In a TLM the priest is offering the prayers on behalf of the people. Follow along in your missal and pray with him but let him vocalize the prayers. Take advantage of this time of relative silence for some deep meditation and conversation with God. This can be a very special time for you so take the opportunity to get close to Him.
 
a person in the pew usually responds if there is no server if the Mass is a Low Mass.
 
I have to admit that a dialog TLM is something I’ve never experienced in my neck of the woods. That’s why when the Ordinary Form came along in the 60s it was so difficult for some parishioners to actually participate aloud, they’d never been allowed to do that before.

No need to be confused. Your Sunday liturgy is a dialog mass. That means the parishioners read or sing the same responses as the servers. Probably best to leave the singing of hymns to the Choir until you check with your priest to make sure.

At the TLM I attend is celebrated by FSSP priest and the Mass includes everything from the Asperges, choir, 4-5 alter servers, and then some. Is this a Missa Cantata?

Pretty much everyone responds to “et cum spiritu tuo” but I aslo here the people (inlcuding myself) singing/chanting Apserges, kyrie, and the Creed, is this ok?

When you say pray with him, do you mean read the prayers and say the responses in silent?

I always do and haven’t been kicked out yet. Credo III especially is irresistible.

You can do that or you can just be attentive.
 
Does not sound bad at all, this probably would be one of the theme songs of Jesus as he is walking in “slow motion” with the Apostles right behind Him :cool:

I really should get into making movies or atleast writing books 😃
By the way I will say a prayer for your vocation, if you do become a priest I hope you will be open minded in celebrating the EF.

Prayers in silence. Its ok to respond with the Altar boys. Just respect your neighbor who may not like to respond verbally.

Also, remember to just follow what most of the parish seems to do. It may vary a little from TLM to TLM.

Thank you for the prayer. I do intend to keep the EF in mind, and may in fact attempt to get it going wherever I am assigned. I have considered joining FSSP, but I feel called to be a diocesan priest. Nevertheless, I will try my best to help the EF stay alive.

But only if there is a beat to go with it :cool:
 
It depends on the custom, e.g. several months ago, ICRSS had a notice in one of their bulletins, encouraging participation in the sung responses for High Mass, but not at Low Mass, where the servers respond for the people.

As a boy, I had heard the people’s response as “Et cum spiri 2 - 2 - 0.” (Anyone with a phone number of 827-7220 would kind of spell it out!) 😃

Actually a “Dialogue Mass” (missa recitata) is a Low Mass where the servers’ responses may also be made by the entire congregation. A missa recitata is never a High Mass. The missa recitata was promoted by PP Benedict XV and again by PP Pius XII, and while it was popular (to a degree, at least) in Europe, for some strange reason it never really caught-on in North America.

In a High Mass, (whether missa cantata or missa solemnis), the servers’ parts are the servers’ parts and are said quietly by them, but anyone in the congregation who knows the music may sing with the choir. That, of course, includes those responses that are sung.

Sweet I like to chant so that’s why I do it 😃
