What do you believe Jesus REALLY looked like?

I didn’t know where else to post this, but I am curious as to what others believe Jesus really looked like, physically.

I’ve always had a hard time with the traditional depictions of Him.that I was exposed to in grade school, etc. as most of what I initially saw were (obviously) artists renderings of a thinly built, almost frail looking man, of average height, with “fragile” (for lack of a better word) facial features.

For whatever reason, I had difficulty imagining that He did in fact look as he was/is so often depicted. Not that I envisioned him being the size of a football player or other athlete, I just personally believe he had a much more masculine appearance, and that his size was really more substantial and his facial features more “macho” (again, for lack of a better word…) yet not intimidating or overly “feminine”.

This has puzzled me for years. I think that for Him to have had the effect He did on people He must have had a stronger physical appearance and wasn’t as “meek” looking as so many works portray Him as.

Of course, being a Jew, He wouldn’t have been as “caucasian” looking as western culture has depicted Him, either.

Not that it really matters all that much, but I’m very curious what others believe He truly looked like in the flesh.

I personally think He had a stronger more substantial frame and body mass, but not huge by any means and facial features which were such that He was masculine looking but kindly and approachable at the same time.
I also think He was of such size and stature that people would have thought twice before trying to mess with Him !

What do YOU think ?:

Imagine the most handsome Jewish or middle-eastern looking man you have ever seen…

I believe Jesus’ humanity was the image of His Divinity. His visibility showed the Invisible, so to speak.

He probably looked like an average guy, I think, since Isaiah 53:2 seems to predict He wouldn’t be extraordinarily physically attractive. Beyond that, I’m not sure. I tend to picture Him as artists have over the centuries.

I was just going to post that:

“Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy face, from the disturbance of men. Thou shalt protect them in thy tabernacle from the contradiction of tongues.” -Psalms 30:21

Maybe he looks like this:

Or maybe actor Oded Fehr bears a resemblance to the Lord:

Probably tall, thin, with chestnut to light brown shoulder length hair, parted in the middle. A short, thick, forked beard. Hazel-blue eyes. A face without spot or blemish. These features are reported in a letter of Publius Lentullus at Rome and they seem to agree with most of the descriptions of other early writers.

Of course these descriptions were prior to the resurrection, afterwards he must have looked somewhat different because Mary nor the Apostles recognized him at first. This may have been due to the horrible beating that he took at the hands of the Romans or possibly something else ,as he was, I assume, in his glorified body or maybe transforming into it. The transfiguration account and the descriptions in Daniel and Revelation seem to picture Jesus in his real glorified appearance.

This is a very interesting question and I hope you pursue it and find as much information as you can find out about.

Jesus told St Faustina to have painted what she saw.

The first image she didn’t like.

This one she did:

Jesus told Faustina *“My gaze from this Image is like My gaze from the Cross”.** (326)*** One afternoon in Stockbridge, Father Seraphim Michalenko shared with us an astounding revelation. In Father Seraphim's words:
*Faustina would come to the artist every so often between January and June of 1934 and every time she came he would have to change the face because she didn’t like it. It was at least 10 times and maybe more. So finally she came one day, and as far as she was concerned, the image was ugly, but Jesus said “leave it in the state its in, it not good but it will do, you don’t have to change it anymore... and thats the one that matches the Shroud.*
Father Seraphim Michalenko from the National Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA, vice-postulator for the cause of St. Faustina in North America, and spiritual director for the film, has this to say regarding our goal:

        Hear Father speak below paragraph
*“I’ve been involved in the production of several videos on Faustina’s life. I have always wanted to see her life portrayed from a very spiritual angle knowing that in her life she had intense spiritual experiences with God, with angels, with saints and that this could serve as a foundation for spreading the message of Divine Mercy which the Lord gave her and gave her the duty of spreading. After seeing several films where spirits were portrayed I figured it was a thing that was possible and whereas some of the stories portrayed in films was ficticious, all those things that happened to Faustina were true.”*

I really have no ideas, but I would suspect that he would look either Jewish or of some sort of middle-eastern decent. However, I try not to focus too much on this, and hope that one day I’ll know for sure.

God Bless!

Deffinetly the Shroud of Turin Image. Although sometimes I imagine the Sacred Heart image.

That would be awesome if Jesus looked like the guy from the Mummy! One of my favourite movies!

Where is the second image from?

Thank you all for your quick responses and for not thinking I’m nuts for posting such a thread !

Interesting answers for sure !

Keep 'em coming !

I have read accounts by two supposed eye-witnesses from antiquity. One states that Jesus was tall, well-made, handsome, and with long hair “the color of wine”. The other describes him as average height and not particularly becoming. These are both in Eusebius’s monumental work, “The History of the Church”. Roanoker

The second image comes from a supposed photograph that a Sister Ana Ali was allowed to take supposedly of Jesus. (Insert disclaimer about private revelations here.) 😉

Does it matter the way you or I “imagine” what Jesus looked like?

Anything we imagine will be bound up with unreality (and therefore falsehood and deception) to a greater or lesser extent.

He looks the way He looks, and that’s all there is to it.

He was most likely an olive skinned, stout, nappy headed Hebrew with a strong build and an equally strong nose - being Jewish. It’s okay I can say that.
