What do you call this Sacrament?

Then again the Code of Canon Law calls it the Sacrament of Penance, so we’ve not completely lost that focus. Nor should we, it’s not a case of either/or.

If I say “Sacrament of”, then I use “reconciliation”. Otherwise, I use confession.
That’s mostly what I do, too. Sometimes I do call it Penance, though not nearly as often.

I like that it goes by multiple names because each name brings out a certain aspect of the sacrament. When teaching on it, I bring up all the different names because it helps in teaching about all the things the sacrament does for us.

We literally confess our sins so that we may be reconciled with God and the Church. And we do penance as a sign of our repentance. And—as the other “names” listed in the Catechism point out—we receive forgiveness through the sacrament, and it is also a pivotal in illustrating and assisting our conversion of heart.

In conversation, I almost always call it Confession. In a more formal setting, I call it the Sacrament of Reconciliation if I’m talking in a Latin right context and I call it the Mystery of Repentance if I’m talking in a Byzantine Rite context. But mostly just Confession.

Our current pastor asks us when we last “celebrated Reconciliation”. We all celebrate the Mass together too at our parish.
I personally say “Confession”, although I realize that isn’t the best term perhaps. And I don’t necessarily celebrate it, although I do feel relieved when it’s over. Although I should be honest and admit that I never go to Confession at my own parish, for various reasons.
