I found out recently that my father is very sick. I got this news from his wife, via facebook, after he’d been in the hospital for weeks. When I say via facebook, I mean she posted on her general page a status asking for prayers - not a private message to me or anything like that. It was…shocking and like a punch in a gut to see that on a social media website versus getting a phone call or even a text.
Anyway. As I’m sure you can imagine, we have never been close. Honestly I can’t recall ever even having a real conversation with him. I was able to get in touch with him today (I live across the country from him), and talking to him was quite frankly, painful. It was like talking to a stranger. It’s always been like talking to a stranger.
I’m sitting here now, with a family of my own, just so sad and feeling like I have no parents even though both of my parents are living. I don’t know how to get over this. I feel like I need to make peace with the fact that my childhood was not ideal and just move on, but it’s so difficult. I can feel the damage affecting my life even now, even though I have an amazing husband and three beautiful children and we’re doing everything right.
How do I move on from this painful feeling? Is there a way to create a relationship with someone who is just not that into you? Is there a way to stop caring? I just keep thinking that he might not be around much longer, and I’ll always mourn what I never had, and there is no way to fix it.
I know this was rambling. I’m sorry. Really any words of wisdom or comfort would be really appreciated.
