What do you do when you're late for Mass?

I woke up Sunday at 12:38 PM, late for Mass. The Mass starts at 12:30 PM on my school campus, but I figured I could at least make it in time for the Gospel because to my knowledge at the time that was when a person could fulfill his Sunday obligation. There is a Mass at 7:00 PM, but I really didn’t want to wait until then to go to Mass; so I hurried, but I made some time for putting in my contact lenses and showering. What should I have done?
 
If the 12:30 PM Mass was the only Mass to which you could have gone, then arriving late due to oversleeping would not have been wrong. In your case though, there was a later Mass to which you could have gone and, presumably, for which you could have arrived on time. Rather than risk distracting congregants and causing scandal by showing up late for the afternoon Mass, I believe it would have been better to go to the evening Mass instead.
