I’m just wondering how Holy Cards have helped you spiritually.

What do you do with your Holy Cards?

How many do you have?

Which Saints Holy Cards to you treasure most?

—Do you keep them in your Bible?

—Do you keep them in your Prayer Book?

—Do you set them out where you pray at home?

—Do you give them out to others?

—Do you bring them to Mass/Adoration?

I use holy cards like paintings or other art. Many people have them at home to draw their mind to God, as a bookmark, to use the prayer, on the desk at work, on the dash of the car, and to give to people to spread devotion, as a calling card when someone you know is not home you can write a brief message and put it under the door.
Use your imagination.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

I generally don’t use Holy Cards at all. I tend to loose them. I much prefer a good old prayer book or prayer books. The ones I do get I usually give them away. Some people do like to collect them though and put them in binders, like baseball cards. I don’t advise using the lamenated ones as bookmarks. They can do harm to a book’s binding after a while. Unlamenated ones are fine though. 👍

I use them as bookmarks. I’ll usually buy one that goes with the book when I purchase a new book (ie a Holy card of the Saint when I am reading a Saint’s life). I have a few that are favorites that I use as extra markers in my LOH and Missal. I often include them in greeting cards or give them as gifts, trying to match the prayer or image on the card to the situation. I keep one in my wallet. Lots of uses for them!

Most all of the above - there are some I’ve bought simply because the image was particularly lovely and the card itself high-quality. Those are framed and on my prayer table.

Three I’ve bought because I love the prayers on them, and say those prayers occasionally (memorised two even, so I don’t really need those cards any more!)

The others are bookmarking my Bibles and prayerbooks (at least one of which I always bring with me to Mass and Adoration), and they’re useful for the other books I’m reading as well 😉

All of the above. Also, my kids love holy cards because of the pretty pictures!

I use them as stated above and in particular i keep some on hand to give to door-to-door missionaries. Just last week a Jehovah’s Witness came to my door to give me a flyer for a program they’re hosting. In return i gave him a Servant of God Paul Murphy, MJ prayer card and a holy card of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. He looked a bit confused but thanked me and walked away. Only God knows what he did with them!

**I’m just wondering how Holy Cards have helped you spiritually. **They are comforting to me when I’m going through something difficult, or even when I just need to pray for a specific purpose and want intercession. They are small enough to keep in my purse, desk, end table, or anywhere.

To me, like someone already mentioned, they are art. I am somewhat picky about those I buy, either new or old, they have appeal to me visually and have a good prayer. Some I own do not have prayers, but were purchased just for their beauty.

Holy Cards have helped me learn of the existence of Saints I wasn’t aware of prior, special prayers and novenas I hadn’t heard of and have given me knowledge of the saints lives, patronage and sufferings I may not have learned otherwise.

What do you do with your Holy Cards? I keep some relevant to my current needs in the zipper compartment of my purse. If I am feeling need for intercession by a particular saint, I will have that Saint’s holy card/prayer with me whenever I wish to pray.

Those I am not currently using I have in a rectangular black leather box lined with red satin - which based on the brand name inscribed, I can only assume once held golf balls long ago 🙂

I have one or two tucked in the edge of some of the mirrors in my home, was not my intention at the outset, it just kind of worked out that way - downstairs bathroom has Mary, downstairs entranceway mirror has Sacred Heart of Jesus. Have St Joseph Protector of Homes and St Michael tucked into edge of picture by front door, and St Christopher in the instrument panel of my car.

I also use them as bookmarks, sometimes in a card to someone who has experienced a loss, or some other occasion.

How many do you have? Hundreds… I collect them, antique or foreign for the most part, but some not fitting either criteria, just particularly useful or beautiful for some reason.
**
Which Saints Holy Cards to you treasure most? ** St Anne has been very dear to me, as are all my Mary cards. Others would be St Michael, St Christopher, St Joseph and St Jude. But there are more, and they are really all dear to me…

—Do you keep them in your Bible? Occasionally.

—Do you keep them in your Prayer Book? No.

—Do you set them out where you pray at home? No, they’re usually kept either in my purse or in the case the rest are kept in, I don’t have a set place that I pray and setting them out doesn’t feel right, they are more of personal thing to me. Sometimes one will be on my nightstand, or in an end table drawer or two, but not because I planned to put them there, just because I put them there during my travels after praying.

—Do you give them out to others? Yes, even to those who aren’t Catholic. Some cards I own are not specifically Saint related, some are prayers to Jesus in a time of need or sorrow, another I gave out recently was a girl scout prayer. Have a friend at work who I always discuss Catholic matters with. She is pregnant and works the shift after I do, so sometimes I will leave one on her desk, relevant to motherhood or others that I know will make her smile, just to let her know I’m thinking of her. My teenage daughter is still learning the faith, so I will sometimes give her one I found during a purchase online that I think she will enjoy. She does seem to like them. She chose Maria Gorretti as her patron saint for confirmation, after having receiving her Holy Card from me last year and becoming interested in her.

**—Do you bring them to Mass/Adoration? ** No, only to confession, which I take the act of contrition, it helps if I’m nervous and am worried I will forget the words…

Hi Sanctus, I’ve collected about 200 over the past years. I scanned them and posted them online if anyone would like to check them out and save them to their computers. You can go to:

I keep them in an album and have made CDs for friends, my local Church and Convent. My favorite ones are of Jesus’ and Mary’s Hearts. Hope you all enjoy and share these holy cards! :extrahappy:

A former pastor used to hand out holy cards of the Sacred Heart - he was famous for it. The road from our city to the city where the bishop lived was a toll road and there were 3 toll booths on the way. Father used to give all the attendants a holy card whenever he’d travel. When father died, at the funeral, the bishop told a story about what happened when he first came to the diocese and had to travel the toll road. The toll booth attendant noticed his collar and asked him if he was Catholic and knew Father Z. The bishop said yes, and the attendant said, “O.K. then, can I have a holy card?”

I have several that I keep in several places.

Some in my desk at work, some on my desk at home, and most are kept in my little zippered compact Bible I carry with me to Adoration or other things.

I have a few (St. Peregrine, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Padre Pio - I lost my St. Jude one)
Keep them on my desk at work
Pray at least 3 times a day
Son is being treated for cancer and these help me daily keep focus on work while feeling connected to his healing process.
Also use to pray for many other cancer patients we’ve come to know on this journey.
They are a great tool and very comforting to have and carry.

I have a few, some of which I have purchased and some of which were gifts. I keep them in my calendar book in my purse. I have one with Mary with the Memorare on it, one with the Beatitiudes, a St Jude prayer card, a St Therese prayer card, and one that has been a big comfort to me, the Prayer to the Holy Spirit prayer card, which has this on it:

I am going to reveal to you the secret of sanctity and happiness. Every day for five minutes control your imagination and close your eyes to the things of sense and your ears to all the noises of the world, in order to enter into yourself. Then in the sanctity of your baptized soul (which is the temple of the Holy Spirit) speak to that Divine Spirit, saying to Him:

O, Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, …I adore
You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me,
console me. Tell me what I should do…give
me Your orders. I promise to submit myself to
all that You desire of me and to accept all that
You permit to happen to me. Let me only
know Your will.

If you do this, your life will flow along happily, serenely and full of consolation, even in the midst of trials. Grace will be proportioned to the trial, giving you the strength to carry it and you will arrive at the gate of Paradise, laden with merit. This submission to the Holy Spirit is the secret of sanctity.

My interesting in praying more has started when my girlfriend bought me a few Holy Cards. Before, I just prayed what I had in my mind and all the prayers that my mother taught me when I was kid (more than 20 years later, I still pray what she taught me. 🙂

I am still using some of them, but most of my devotions now are coming from several little books.

dulcissima, thank you for sharing this… beautiful! I will have to try and find it somewhere…

They lay on the kitchen table where I do morning office along with a list of the names of people for whom I pray.

Wow… wonderful! I’ve not seen most (If not all) of them.
Where do you get all these? In Singapore, I can only get the normal one. Usually Sacred Heart of Jesus, Divine Mercy, Mary, Holy Family, St. Michael, St. Jude, St Francis, St. Christopher, St. Anthony of Padua, and other famous Saints.

Hi vince2paul, I found these on ebay. The Christianity section has a Holy Cards subsection where people sell holy cards from all over the world, mostly vintage cards. People have online ebay stores where they sell holy cards too. I’ve heard some people out there have collected thousands…! I’ve come across a few personal websites where people have posted their cards. An online photo album was easier for me to do. 🙂

I always like to have various kinds of holy cards on hand to slip into a letter, note, or greeting card I am sending someone.
