What do you get from being at Mass?

Actually, going to Mass is usually very difficult for me. I’m agoraphobic (don’t like being in crowded situations). Sometimes it’s bad, sometimes not as bad, but never pleasant like it used to be.

My awareness of my situation and my discomfort can be very distracting. I will usually focus on something on the floor. The parish we often attend has an exposed aggregate (small rocks) floor, and bits of glitter (from little girl’s dresses, etc) are usually found in the crevasses. These are my “stars” and I study the “constellations” made up of bits of glitter. I find red stars and gold stars and green stars (!) and imagine myself in the vastness of space, all alone, with nobody around, travelling from one star to another.

I imagine that I’m hearing the Mass on the radio of my solitary space ship. I hear it, but I don’t see it. I see my stars in the cracks of the floor while I listen to the Mass on my radio.

But sometimes I get so focused on my stars that I realize I’m not listening to my radio. It’s like a radio playing in the background - you are aware of it, but not really listening. That’s when I miss a reading, or I miss the homily. I miss a lot.

But that makes what I don’t miss all the more special.

FWIW, here’s how you can spot the agoraphobics in your midst. They will try to be at the end of the pew. They will look up or down a lot. They will have their arms crossed. They will prefer to sit near the exits and will often glance at the exits. They will usually be overdressed. They will be the last people to rise when standing and the first to sit back down (it’s not because we’re lazy). I usually stand in the rear of the Church from the Sign of Peace until the end of Communion.

If you see someone like me, the kindest thing you can do is to ignore me. I’m trying to ignore you. It’s nothing personal.
That describes me very well! Last year at Easter mass my top 3 pews were taken, so I had to pick one that was open, then this nice little family comes over to my pew and takes their seats next to me. There were people in front and back of me, I was dying lol.

What do Catholics get out of going to Mass?

This is a favorite question of a dear friend who is not Catholic. She likes to ask this very personal question when there is an opportunity. It is like taking a survey. 😃

I am looking for very personal answers which I can relay to her. Thank you sincerely.
And yourself GM?

Personally I prefer praying in a large, quiet empty Church.
Mass has always been something of an endurance test and a penance - I accept the problem is me as others get a lot out of it and I ask God’s forgiveness each occasion. When I hear a homily that has a bit of meat to it and makes sense, about once a year, I almost cry with joy.

As a young man I once remarked to an old Dominican Priest afterwards what a great Mass it was. His unimpressed dry response was “my son, every mass is a good Mass.”

Which probably sums up the Olde Worlde (Scholastic philosophic) approach with the New World approach. Subjective feelings don’t matter in the last analysis. What matters is whether we are changed/strengthened to go out and live better lives.

I am not sure of some of the responses below though that go even further and say that it isn’t about us but about God.

This suggests that God can be well worshipped without this reality in any way being connected to our own development. I don’t think this is a balanced view of the matter.

Even if we cannot always see or feel the linkage…the two cannot be separated philosophically.

True worship of God is also true nourishment of our own selves as humans.
To suggest otherwise makes God a bit of an alien to human nature which is surely not really the truth of the matter.

Yes, it’s not a matter of what we get, we come to Mass to give God the worship that is due to Him alone.
Agreed.

I read this and it struck an absolute cord inside my heart ;

Though I do think it’s right and good that we benefit from Mass and we know how we feel that in all the ways we do, I just think it’s really important for me to put that secondary to the fact I’ve gone to Mass to give back to Our Lord, everything that happens after that is bonus.

If it’s possible for Peacefulness to burn inside of you, that is how I feel at Mass. I struggle to articulate things well - that’s as good of description as I can muscle at the moment.
