A friend of mine will be ordained to the priest hood this summer. What kind of gift would be appropriate? Particularly for someone who strongly loves the traditional mass and customs?

My nephew requested some books that he knew he would need.
  • Rite of Baptism for Children. Liturgical Press, 2002
  • Pastoral Care of the Sick, pocket sized version. Catholic Book Publishing (1983 ?)
  • Shorter Book of Blessings, Catholic Book Publishing, 1992.
  • Rite of Marriage (1st ed, 1969) Catholic Book Publishing, 1991.
  • Order of Christian Funerals with cremation. Catholic Book Publishing, 1990.
  • Handbook of Indulgences, USCCB Publishing, 2006
You might ask if anything like this is needed.

Excellent advice–thank you! I just assumed the diocese would pay for those types of things. Glad you corrected my assumption!

SamH gave you some excellent choices.

Also, it used to be that you could give the four-volume set of the Brievary (Liturgy of the Hours). But, nowadays, with smartphones and Kindles, there are apps for the Liturgy of the Hours, which can access the current day, plus other days’ Psalms and Readings from sites like divineoffice.org/ on the Internet.

Peace!

24 pairs of black socks.

Having some experience with this I would say no boxed gifts. Have you gotten the invitation yet? It might say this on there.

I have been to several ordinations, and normally, monetary is preferred, the new priest can buy what he needs himself that is not given to him at ordination.

In a lot of cases, some members of the family or close friends may pledge or donate the chalice, some the books, a mass kit or a personal mass kit, holy water sprinker…vestments…Or you can ask the family a list of items he needs, and you can pick.
