I have come to be very fascinated with this rite as it developed sort of on it’s own and was separated from much of Europe so it developed it’s own liturgy. I understand their liturgy is very ancient.

One thing that is VERY interesting if a bit odd to me is the coupling of a solemn and mystical ceremony more typical of the rest of the eastern rites but with drum playing seemingly by ministers of some sort. Don’t know if it is the priest or deacon or what.

And their fasting regimen is truly ascetic!

What are your thoughts?

I’ve attended only one Ethiopian Orthodox liturgy, so I am in no position to say anything.

There is an English translation of the Ethiopian Catholic liturgy on line somewhere.

Ater watching a video on youtube, their music reminds me of those film soundtracks you see in Biblical or Egyptian movies with the voices chanting with drums. Their chant sounds more Middle Eastern to me compared to the more European-sounding Gregorian Chant. It really does sound like their liturgy harkens from ancient times.

Their church architecture also looks very traditional and the bishop holds a golden cross, just like what I saw with an Eastern Catholic bishop.
