I’m not sure what the point they’re trying to make is. I noticed several instances of Catholic imagery. I initially like this song and had seen the video but saw it again recently and was kinda like, hmmm…is this bad? Do you think it’s in a mocking way? Unfortunately I can’t seem to find information on their religious background. Maybe it’s just for shock value. I don’t know. Here’s the link:

scroll down to “featured videos” and select “Helena” by ‘My Chemical Romance’. Warning to those out there that dislike hard rock/alternative…might want to turn the volume down a bit, but it’s not too bad.

Ehhh, Emo music. Hate emo music, its so negative and just stupid, most of it it just guys with bad voices screaming about pain and cutting yourself and tears and stuff like that, it’s ridiculous. I actually think the video is decent, well choreographed, and actually a lot of pretty girls. I like when the “deceased” girl re-awakens and does the ballarina moves, pretty cool. I’m not really sure what kind of message they’re trying to make though, I know songmeanings.com would have people discussing the meaning of the song, maybe not the video though unless you ask. Now if you want to see a really offensive Catholic video, watch Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana. It’s an awesome video though, really trippy and weird, and at least its a LOT better music then some kid in tight paints and all black with to much eye liner screeching about pain.

Uh, sorry I don’t know what “emo” music is. 😛 :o

I did some research. Apparently it’s about the death of his Grandma. Go figure. I’m just wondering about the Catholic overtones to that video - is it supposed to be mocking or what (I’m thinking, in a Madonna-esque way)? Also on their website they are selling shirts with rosaries around the band’s name. :hmmm:

I don’t think they’re too bad, music wise. I’ve seen better, I’ve seen worse.

Maybe this should be in Popular Media, now that I think about it. Mods, move me if I’m in the wrong place.

Emo is like emotional, it’s a music genre, and it’s exactly like I just said, frail boys in tight pants all in black screaming about stuff. Many emo’s cut themselves to prove they are hard core, its very emo related. Emo has become very popular lately, and I can’t stand it. Oh yeah they usually talk/sing/ or actually do cry, and they’re just usually really depresive. Most emo’s arn’t even really depresive, it’s almost like a front.

I assume you’re referring to the “helena” video. I thinks it’s mockery and at worst maybe even blasphemy (hard to say where they filmed it and whether they were in a consecrated Catholic Church–hopefully it wasn’t a catholic church). I usually try to stay away from that type of stuff as it doesn’t glorify God. Rather, it uses Him and His church as a backdrop to provide some kind of twisted meaning to their music video.
I did watch another video by this band, however, and thought it was rather good: “The Ghost of You”.
I’m not much of a rocker anymore (I’m 36), but I still occassionally pull out the old albums. Most of the time, I wonder why I"m listening to it as a lot of the music glorifies sex.

Maybe I’m just too old to be commenting on this…

Oh. I actually liked how passionate he seemed in the video. It was kind of a change from other stoned-out stuff. But, oh well. Everyone’s different. I can see how taking it to far could get annoying, though.

“The Ghost of You” is cool. I don’t have a problem with that one.

Well, chemical romances are not right. Helena is wearing a Goth ballerina suit. The lead singer is not a minister. In the end, one of the pall bearers is wearing a WOOL FEDORA in the RAIN! No one would do that. Even someone 13 years old would know that!
