It is interesting that there seems to be an idea that there is room for ONE Catholic radio network and it is EWTN. I’m happy that there are more than one, I wish there were two dozen!

The BustedHalo.com website is pretty bad.

But I’ve never heard anything unorthodox on the Busted Halo show, although it may be too fun for some people. (How DARE THEY!!!)

Amen!

If you read Raymond Arroyo’s book about Mother Angelica you may remember that she had to fight the American bishops’ resistance when she was starting her orthodox Catholic EWTN radio station. If you haven’t read it, it is quite eye-opening to see how liberal the bishops of America were when they gave Mother Angelica such a hard time. Now, the bishops have their own radio station (The Catholic Channel) to compete with the only orthodox radio (EWTN). Since they were hosting the pope when he came to America they probably asked him to say the kind words about the Catholic Channel. My guess is that the pope did not realize he was saying the kind words about the liberal station. The bishops even recommended that Benedict give an award to Wolff Blitzer of the most anti-Catholic TV staion in America… CNN.
First of all, the The Catholic Channel is a project of the archdiocese of New York, not the USCCB.

What reason do you have to label The Catholic Channel “liberal?” Your statement that EWTN is the “only orthodox radio station” implies that The Catholic Channel is not faithful to church teaching. ** If you could provide any specific examples of Catholic Channel hosts denying, criticizing, or purposely misrepresenting church teachings, I’d like to hear it.**

Please don’t make the mistake of assuming that, if a Catholic channel’s programing doesn’t conform to your personal taste, then it must mean the channel is “unorthodox.”

By the way, Lino Rulli and other Catholic Channel hosts have made it clear several times on the air the TCC was never created to or ever wants to “compete” with EWTN. The folks at the Catholic Channel feel that the two channels compliment each other instead of opposing each other. Unfortunately, from what I hear, it doesn’t seem that the folks at EWTN have the same idea.

I The Catholic Channel seems to try to appeal to the masses more by being hip and edgy. EWTN presents the faith as what it is - complex, beautiful, and worthy of serious discussion!
You and some other folks here might not like the fun and light-hearted aspect of most Catholic Channel shows. But you have to realize the people they’re going for. They’re trying to appeal to BOTH daily mass Catholics and people who accidentally tuned into them after listening to Howard Stern. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard Lino Rulli read emails from people who tell him that they had absolutely NO INTEREST in listening to Catholic radio before TCC came along.

Great points Dan… you seem like a great guy 🙂

My question is, we don’t hold Mass in our lives 24/7 … we do other thins in our lives that aren’t necessarily “God” things (although God is still a part of our lives). If that’s the case, then the Catholic Channel is perfect…it still lets me live out the rest of my life, talk about other things in life (the lighter side, if you will), but with the assurance that the people I’m listening to share the same beliefs as myself.

I think this picture sums it up. Jesus laughing. A great concept. God bless the Catholic Channel!

I think we have established that Busted Halo the radio show is fine. The arguments between the validity of EWTN and the Catholic channel seem a little silly to me. If they are both orthodox then everything else is just a matter of taste.

The website associated with Busted Halo concerns me still and the fact that people may listen to a perfectly orthodox radio station and then be directed to a misleading website is wrong and misleading.

Catholic World News pointed out this recent article on Busted Halo. They describe it like this:
Meanwhile, back at the Busted Halo, a young Catholic braces herself to receive some bad news from her lesbian mother. But it turns out it’s only apostasy.
“I need to tell you something.” My mom said.
“Okay.” I prepared myself for something tragic, when instead I heard,
“I’m not Catholic anymore, I just thought you should know.”
For a minute there, Ma, you had her worried.
Putting the sarcasm aside, there are some very disturbing and counter-productive elements to this story.

I was under the impression that this website was supposed to be a tool and resource for young people (20 somethings) looking into the faith. How does an article like this benefit anyone? Nothing of value is gained here. We have a tragic story where no one has been spiritually enriched. No one is brought closer to Jesus and his Church. We don’t even get a moral of the story sort of thing. We are led to believe that its all the Church’s fault because she is judgmental and not embracing enough. This poor woman got so bogged down in the Greek and Latin that she missed the point.

I think this quote sums it up.
The God I learned from my mother was wholly compassionate, free of judgment and always forgiving. She made it clear that this God was at the heart of Catholicism.
Free of judgment? What Bible has she been reading. I don’t understand how a scholar like her could come to this conclusion.

I think this is why a lot of people end up disillusioned with the Church. They get this idea that we can do no wrong, sin doesn’t exist and I have do what feels right to me. Then we have things like Busted Halo saying “There, there. Maybe the Church will change.”, instead of we need to change.

But I am still filled with the question: What is the point of having an article like this on Busted Halo? What good does it serve (in it’s presented form)?
