Reformation Day has been a part of my Lutheran tradition for as long as I can remember. However, its emphasis has changed. I can remember an anti-Catholic tone to the celebrations in years past.
On the other hand, a few years back at the Reformation Day service held by Lutheran in the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, the homilist for the service was Cardinal McCarrick. While I’m sure that some Lutherans were a bit shocked by this, I was pleased to have the opportunity to hear the Gospel preached by a Catholic in that setting.
While this was likely only a small ripple in the pond of Lutheran/Catholic relationships, it was heartening to have it happen.
