SDA teach the soul will die at death. And quote O.T. scripture ecccles. 9:4-5
And lazarus sleeping and is dead.

Have you ever listened to this teaching. ? Because using scripture to prove this is very convincing.
The dead know nothing. And the soul that sins dies.

I would claim that is just the opposite.

Look at Mark 9:4, the Transfiguration

“And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus”

Moses and Elijah were clearly awake and speaking.

Interestingly, according to the book Early Syriac Christianity (which focuses on Maronite - Catholic - theology), Syriac Christianity also seemed to think that the souls “slept” prior to the resurrection on the last day.

Syriac Christianity was not very influenced by Greek philosophy as other Christians were. They mostly stuck to the Jewish origins of the faith.

Having said that, the New Testament indicates that the spiritual aspect of man lives on even prior to the Resurrection.

How so?
  1. Moses and Elijah were definitely dead. Yet, at Christ’s Transfiguration, they were alive, awake and conversing with Christ - Who is incapable of deceiving or being deceived.
  2. Lazraus and the rich man in the parable both died, but both were fully conscious and the rich man was interceding on behalf of his brothers.
Pretty hard to do that if you’re dead - or even asleep.

This is solid evidence against bible alone.

You may kno the JW’s teach this also, as Russell brought it
with him from SDAists. Its rooted in the OT. got a few NT
verses here:

***************************Luke 20:38
Even Moses demonstrates that the dead are raised, in the passage about the burning bush. For he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for to Him all are alive.” Some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well!”…

***************************Mark 12:27
“He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:8 😊 And even those in purgatory are on their way.

Yes and I would add the good thief passage, where he was going to be in paradise with Jesus on that very day! certainly not in soul sleep

Thanks 4 understanding. It was a surprise to listen to the soul sleep teaching and believe that it is valid.
So now I understand how to be deceived by quoting scripture. Weird huh?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Well, the SDA cannot be separated from the teachings of Ellen Gould White and her “visions.” The poor thing suffered organic brain damage as a child and was in a come for three weeks. She later was semi-paralyzed and worked in the family hat making business. Those hats were felt and used mercury - a deadly toxin. Only after this did she begin receiving visions.

Since there is no historical apostolic precedent or connection for any of the peculiar SDA beliefs, they are essentially made up. No idea what their “inspiration” was. We can neither read her mind nor judge her soul, but those who follow her most certainly have placed their salvation at some degree of risk.

I worked with an SDA chaplain for years. We got along famously, but their doctrines are not only odd, and at odds with all of Christianity. Despite what many say, they are Christian, but way out there on the fringe.

The Church holds that Moses died. And it does so for very good reasons, namely that it says so in the Bible

Deut 34:5-6 And Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor

I regrettably left out a few more NT passages proclaiming
Heaven, not soul-sleep.

***************************************Colossians 3:1
Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ, strive for the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.…

***********************************John 14:2
In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am

“Eyes haven’t seen, ears haven’t heard, nor has
it entered into any ones’ heart what God has
prepared for those who love Him !”
