We had a First Holy Communion in our parish this week and it got me thinking about mine. My most vivid memory is of messing up the song we were supposed to sing during the processional. A friend said she best recollects tasting the Eucharist and wondering what she possibly could have done wrong to make the sublime “Bread of Heaven” taste the way it did.

If you received FHC as a child, what are your most vivid memories of the day?

I didn’t have the ceremony as I was almost ten when I became Catholic officially.

The canon spoke about something or other in his Sacristy and I remember him slapping me n the head and giving me Communion.

I was 21. I remember being baptized and confirmed about the same time.

I remember being concerned about receiving correctly - the nuns had us practice ahead of time, though. I can’t say I was a particularly pious child so for me it was mostly about the dress, party and gifts.

I recieved " first communion" way before I converted to the faith. All through high school. My first communion after confirmation was sophomore year in college. My first communion really was my first school Mass as a freshman in high school in a gym.

I remember wearing a white shirt and dark trousers. I remember the girls wore white frilly dresses. I remember getting a prayer book and rosary (that I still have for some reason at nearly 60) I remember having cake and getting my first camera from my parents. I was 8 and I’m not sure I ever partook of the eucharist after that time. I never remember going to confession after that either. I think maybe I remember receiving that day but that just might be that I know I probably did.

Keeping my hands folded right and pointing up so the angel wouldn’t fall, making sure my teeth did not touch the host…and how hot it was in the church!

As our monsignor said last week at first holy communion for about 12 2nd graders, the most important part of it is… Your SECOND holy communion!

Don’t remember much but I do remember being concerned about how my hands were supposed to be as we sat waiting for communion and I remember being confused as to why the bread tasted no different than it was before it was consecrated. I remember I was wearing a new shiny watch (which I still have) that was a gift. Remember it was the first time I ever wore a sport coat and tie. And I remember receiving what is now my family bible from my parents at lunch afterward where we got together with a couple of other families whose kids had also received First Communion.

And I remember it was 26 years ago this May 6th.

I was 8 I remember having a bouquet of flowers for after mass-i was small so I was infront of the line of kids. I still have my first communion missal and prayer cards, as well as a scapluar, and gloves. I also got a rosary, but I misplaced that.

I also remember practicing with unconsecrated hosts in the classroom and having brunch after in the church basement with other families.

All I really remember is getting a stuffed animal (which I still have). I got a lion, so I’m guessing all the boys got lions and all the girls got lambs.

I still have no idea why. Anyone know why that’s a thing?

Edit: My bad, I also remember my dad spending all my money on bacon.

  1. My mother bought me a white fur cape that Sister Bernadine wouldn’t let me wear.
  2. My mother chopping my hair so short that I cried.
  3. Being first in line due to my height
  4. The host being stuck to the roof of my mouth and me getting it down with my tongue just in time for the recessional.
  5. The reception at home and ham salad sandwiches.
😊

Ice cream for “breakfast” (which wasn’t at breakfast time).

My only memory of the day at all in fact.

I was a second grader. It was raining that Sunday morning so my grandfather grabbed the plastic tablecloth off the table, wrapped me in it, and carried me to the car. I must have looked like I was about to faint from fasting because my teacher whipped out saltines from her purse (she was obviously prepared) and had me eat them as we were marching out at the end of Mass.

awwww 🙂

The same was for me. I’m not sure if I really understood it even though I attended Catholic school in the fifties. My grandmother sewed me a beautiful dress, and we marched around the block with the Knights ahead of us. We also had first grade girls dressed as angels that proceeded us when we received. I think I was more scared if we goofed up somehow because I knew we’d hear it from our teacher.

I received a bouquet, small red roses surrounded by white carnations.

To this day, more than 60 years later, the smell of carnations takes me back to that day.

I had a brand new baby sister, just a month or 2 old. And house guests.

My mom had given my sister a bath in her little tub. Our house guest took the tub, and instead of dumping the water placed the entire thing on the bathroom sink.

I thought it was empty, so when I went to brush my teeth, the contents of the tub fell all over me and my crinoline slip that was supposed to go under my communion dress.

Thank goodness my mom had bought two similar slips, we didn’t have a dryer.

I also remember that I really liked the slip. It was like a tutu.

Processing down the center aisle to our pews with the girls on the right & the boys on the left. Both girls & boys in white. Going up to the Communion rail to receive & praying the wafer won’t fall off my tongue. Having my Communion picture taken with me holding my white pearl-like Rosary beads & white prayer book (which I both still have) & my bouquet of white roses with a red center rose.

I was in 2nd grade, over 45 years ago, and I have no specific memory of that day. I do still remember the photographs taken on that day, however, in my parents’ old photo album, even though I haven’t looked at those pictures in over 20 years.

Great question! It was May 12 1968. All us boys were vested, single file to the sanctuary/communion rail, kneeling, hands together at your chest, slightly tilled out, right thumb over left making a cross…still receive the same way daily…minus the rail:mad:
