Hi all
I have family who are died in the wool Lutherans ELCA. Two different congregations, thousands of miles apart, both completely enthralled with this rewriting of the Bible in the format of a novel. Condensed into 31 chapters, they seem amazed by the story of salvation. My concern is that Max Lucado is a preacher in the Church of Christ, and the marketing and testimonials largely come from Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. I have read the feel good inspirational booklets by Max Lucado, they are nice. But what have they left out? Neither my pastor or my DRE have heard of this book. I have decided to read it, but I would like some feedback from other reliable sources. I am seriously considering righting a review showing the pros and cons of this type of catechesis. I am also surprised that ELCA is embracing this. They really are not similar to the Churches of Christ–particularly in liturgy which has contemporary music, bands on ‘stage’ beside the altar, and recently, their minister is now called ‘speaker’. Any comments are appreciated.
God Bless, LeAnn

thanks I searched for Max Lucado and The Story before posting. Wonder why I didn’t get these in my results?

From what I have learned via wikipedia (I know I know, read with caution) and the Oak Hills church website, they are a trinitarian denomination, sola scriptura, mainly new testament, require water baptism, and they clearly view communion as a symbol of Christ’s Last Supper rather than Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. It seems to be a once saved always saved church but did not see anything that specifically declares once saved always saved.

Honestly I am somewhat surprised Jimmy Aiken or another apologist has not picked up on this trend and written something about it. There are billboard signs up in my city inviting people to come listen to the ‘speaker’ explain The Story.

I just did a search on Google (not the CAF search) for Max Lucado. Among the links that came up was the one for the 3 CAF threads.

oh with CAF search I only found the one thread started in '08 and it did not really answer my question.

Although your family members may be interested in this novel and they may be members of the ELCA, I don’t think that necessarily equates to the novel being embraced by the ELCA. Maybe someone from the ELCA can weigh in.

Good point. One congregation’s minister is teaching from it, but I don’t know that it is approved or anything by the synod.
