What do you think about this Question and opinion, > Scenario follows.
Just say,We have a Christian President and house minority leader , they go to confession.
They say to the Priest ,who is there in Persona Christi, that personally they believe abortion is evil, they would never commit such, however, because they are elected officials they represent all the people, and therefore must up hold the national law which permits people to choose what they consider personally right for them concerning abortion.
What must the Priest say to them in council according to the Magisterial, the teaching authority of the Church?
Although I have never heard the President or the minority leader announce their beliefs I do believe, as
Christians, it is how they feel they must consider it.

My opinion is that our officials should tell the people truthfully what they believe before God, and do every thing they possibly can to right the immoral laws of our nation.

When I wrote to Bill Clinton all those years ago ,when he first ran for office, He answered me and basically said, that he believed personally that abortion was an evil but that he as representative of the people would have to uphold the law. I didn’t l ike his answer but I voted for him anyway.
When I wrote to Barrack Obama on the subject, I did not rec’ a reply and so I did not vote for him.

Well, I’m no priest, but in my opinion: Abortion is not about what you “personally” believe. It is objectively evil, and as such, must be opposed to the best of your ability. Yes, the “right” to abortion is a law of the land right now, but we are to follow what God wants over what even a majority votes for. The president must work for what he knows to be objectively right, to the extent that his office allows.
 
Francis Cardinal Arinze teaches that for those who are personally opposed to abortion but remain pro-choice, he responds: "This is the same as saying “I am personally opposed to shooting all of the members of congress. But, if someone else wants to do that, it’s pro-choice”.

Pro-choice is pro-abortion, not matter the weasel words they use in conjunction with it.
 
A law that allows for direct murder (abortion) is NOT really a law at all. So the president and other leaders in your confession scenario should hear from the priest that they must ignore the will of the people and do what is** right**, despite the rules of democracy.

Yes, Surritter,but after the vote campaign is over and we get somewhat of a balance on the Supreme Court, I haven’t heard anyone say they are going to do that, who is in the house or senate fighting passionately day in and day out, pushing it to the media?not even the politicians using the issue so vehemently during campaigns.It is as if it had been shelved until the next national vote and then brought out to be used as a political “tool”.You have all these people against abortion,But No ONE willing to really do any thing about it. Is it any wonder that the people throw up their hands and give up their vote. Peace, Carlan
 
Like others, I am not a priest, but the execuse given by politicians is a very lame and thus unacceptable.

Politicians are about finding the right balance between maintain the status quo and working for change to improve America.

If they say they are personally against abortion, then they are morally bound to their conscience to work to end abortion. They may not succeed now, but someday they will.

I would expect such politicians to unite together and introduce a bill every year to limit or end abortion. In time, through debate they can change minds and eventually pass the required law, required to reassert that America is ondeed a moral country.

The thing is, politicans love to get in and then stay in office. They don’t want to upset any group that would work against their reelection. So they waffle.

President Obama is pro-abortion. One of his first acts as President was to issue an Executive Order - his own authority - to restore US funding - using our money - for abortions overseas.

Well, I was just going by the scenario given in your OP. If the politician tried to reason it away, then the priest should withhold absolution.

But you’re right; it’s a shame that too many people just shelve it until the next election.
