What do you think when people say “everything happens for a reason” or “things happen as they should”? Is this true? It seems to me not, because then we wouldn’t have free will. Then again, it’s a comforting thought to believe this and that everything happens according to God’s will. Can anyone help me sort this out? Thanks!

I think it demonstrates the faith the person has that God will not abandon them to their circumstances, and that looking back, they can see how God has been working ‘behind the scenes’ to bring good out of even the worst of circumstances. Kind of like the “Footprints” poem…
I don’t think people mean that God decides to make people go through bad times, but that He allows it, and then uses those bad times for their benefit and for His glory.
Anyway, that my two cents.

I completely believe that God can bring beauty and goodness out of any situation. There’s a lot of sin-and sin’s affects-in this world, and God never wills sin.

I think of it this way: God wants us to get from point A to point B. We start on that path, with His grace. Someone comes and plops a big boulder blocking our way. God shows us a previously hidden side path that will get us to the same destination, so we start that road. A wolf comes and chews our leg off ;), great, now we can’t walk. God sends a passer-by with a donkey cart who gives us a ride. We continue along. Etc etc until we realize that we are at the destination where God wanted us, but the path was unlike what we planned it would be. But all along the way God provided, and thus His Will was not thwarted.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think “Everything happens for a reason”. Some times, it’s just luck. For instance-a plane crashes, everyone dies. Is it the wrath of God? When 99% of planes don’t crash, is it Gods mercy? A murderer goes free and lives for 50 more years-while a much loved baby dies in a car accident. Bad luck, pure and simple.

I’m deeply religious, but I also believe in luck and free will.
