What Do You Think is the Hardest Scripture to Obey?

“I give you a new command: love one another as I have loved you”.

It seems impossible, yet it is a command.
It is good to be reminded that some things Jesus said were not mere suggestions but commandments… In fact, now that i think about it, i am not sure he ever just made “suggestions”…

It goes back to the Deformation in 1500’s… hwere the idea got started that good works are not necessary for salvation…

“Love your neighbor.”

There are times when it takes all the will in my heart to not explode in anger at some people, make insulting insinuations; but I try my best to show Jesus to them in my actions…

Get a

Give them a 🙂

You know, for me it’s the whole beam in my eye while I’m looking at the specks in the eyes of others…
It is always an eye-opening experience for me to realize (for the 100th time) that i see what is not right in others quicker than i see it in myself  😦

… It is SO uncomfortable to see all the “unrighteous” stuff going on inside of me, things i would not have begun to see unless/until such & such thing happens… some conflict or another.

I feel awful when i see that, 4 example, i am expecting something from someone that i have no real right to expect…that i am being, objectively speaking, unreasonable & self-centered. Even though i did not (as per this example) intend to be unreasonable/selfish… when i realize that’s the way someone else will see it… it makes me feel pretty “crunchy”…

Hmmm…

but then i have to tell myself that i am only human… can’t beat up on myself too much… :o
at least i see it… :o It isn’t good to be blind…

Actually, that is another one that is difficult - loving others as i love myself… since, it is times like the aforementioned that i do not like or love myself much…

but then again, i have to ask myself: why should i feel “crunchy” (bad) about being imperfect when that is what i am and will always be while in this world…

It is hard to strive for “perfection” (Be perfect as the Father is perfect…) while @ the same time being gentle w/ yourself when you fail to reach that goal… 😦 🤷

Most difficult?

“I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods
before Me.”

This is the first commandment, for a very good reason, I think.

Anytime that our hearts set up other “gods” to worship,
we are in sin. We are at a distance from God.

“gods?” Money, power, vanity, “me first, me alone”,
hideous pride -
that would have no other god but it*self *be done homage.

Makes me think of Paradise Lost, where Satan - having been
ejected from heaven - says:

“Better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven.”

Less poetically? “I will have it done my way.”

And as long as a human soul insists on having it “my way” -
so long will that soul be far from God, by it’s own choice.

“I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28)

Little bit of a confession here: I’ve been addicted to Internet pornography since I was about 9 years old. It’s been a tough battle for me but I’m starting to come around.

I’ll give you two.

Paraphrase “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, pray for those that despise you, etc”

I find a lot of people to have a true absence of good will. Their hatred of me is implacable. I could have a halo over my head and they’d still think I’m trash. It’s hard to love those who have no prospect of giving good will in return. Only doing it for the love of God gives me the strength to pray for them.

“Whosoever looketh upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

The mortification of the eyes, mind and heart in regards to chastity is a major thorn in the flesh for me. Honesty it can be torture for me at times in this permissive society. 😦

It is good to confess things. I have heard about how addictive porn is, so i (somewhat) know what you are going through… (I’ve never been addicted to that, but have been addicted to other things).

God bless you for fighting this evil…

Just wondering how you got into it at such a yougn age??

Wow, this is interesting… I could have written this post myself…
I told this friend once how many poeple just seem to dislike me before they even know me… He said something about how some people have a light aroiund them & those in darkness can’t stand the light… I was mystified because i know that i am a sinner… & didn’t see much of the light he referred to… But it is kind of interesting that the closer i get to Christ, the more i have the problem you speak of…
Well, at least i am not alone. :o

Wasn’t a very social person so I used my computer a lot. When you surf the Internet for a while you’re bound to come across it at some point. I wasn’t Catholic at the time but atheist so I didn’t have any moral problems with it.

When younger, were you allowed to be a child?

Did you have a happy childhood?
I hope this isn’t completely off topic in me answering.

Despite the fact that my younger sister and I literally never got along, I had a very happy CHILDHOOD. It was after we got older that everything changed. My mother was pressured into having children after the death of her first child, and both of my parents together are working a total of 6 jobs which barely pays enough money to get expenses paid. All I’ve heard about over the past four years was how expensive I am, and how my school is too expensive (nevermind the fact that they CHOSE to pay for the first two years, I’ve paid for everything since then, and I have NEVER asked them for money because I know they don’t have it). By the time I left home for college, my parents were going through a rough point in their marriage, they only stayed together because of my 10 year old autistic brother, and my sister and I continued to always fight. All I’ve heard for the past couple of years is how much of a burden I am. Why would I want to put any child through that?

That’s excluding the fact that I’ve just never been really excited to see babies (and toddlers were even worse), so to be honest the only reason I would have children is for the same reason my parents had me: out of a sense of “duty.”

I really shouldn’t badmouth my parents though. I make it sound like it was completely bad, and it really wasn’t. And truthfully maybe from an outside perspective it would appear differently. My parents made sure that we ate dinner together every night despite their busy work schedules, and they tried their best to make sure we were happy. It wasn’t until we were much older that their real feelings were revealed. They sacrificed for us, and I hope that if I end up having children that I’ll be able to sacrifice like that as well.

Matthew 18

[21]Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”
[22] Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.

Its not off-topic because you are explaining your reasons as to why certain scriptures/teachings are hard to obey… & it is always good to analyze why we feel a certain way…
. All I’ve heard about over the past four years was how expensive I am, and how my school is too expensive
Well, that explains things… sort of.
It’s interesting how some people who have imperfect parents choose not to have children as a result… & some decide to have them & tell themselves they will do a better job (they usually do a better job in some ways & are blind-sided in others… )
All I’ve heard for the past couple of years is how much of a burden I am. Why would I want to put any child through that?
It is wise to be cautious like this… but maybe you would make a better parent since you would be aware of sending these kinds of negative, destructive messages to your children…

I’m not trying to convince you to have children. The only person who knows your situation better than you do is God…

I would love to have children, but i guess it is not in the cards right now… & probably won’t be in the future… so i have to accept my cross (etc)…

Thanks for sharing. I just thought it was odd because i rarely hear of anyone not liking children… so i wanted to know how you got to that point…

God bless…

This is a good advertisement for those devices that keep certain things off the computer… 😦

I went several years w/o watching TV (& don’t have internet @ home)… Recently, i started wtching just 2 shows on TV… & with just that small amount of exposure… I sometimes get this feeling i am polluting my mind/heart/soul… (and the shows I watch are not… well, i was going to say they aren’t R rated or even PG, but now that i think about it, sometimes they are… hmmm… maybe i should stop… I guess we Americans get numb to the stuff & don’t always see it for what it is…).:hypno:

I pray for you & all young people… The media is poisoning us…
(I don’t feel that’s an exaggeration)…

The hardest scripture to obey is when Jesus commands us to “Be ye perfect”.

I don’t know how you get much harder than that!

when i was a child, i heard someone say “well, nobody’s perfect”. I thought of myself… and the whole notion of being perfect… & I remember thinking to myself something to the effect that i couldn’t see anything terribly wrong with me… that maybe i wasn’t too far from being perfect (yes, i know that sounds arrogant, but i was a very young child, and a very protected one at that…). In those days, probably not much was wrong with me (sin-wise)… Today, it is a different story. Now i am sometimes even overly-scrupulous, thinking i can do nothing right 😦 … (which is probably a thought from the Accuser of the Brethren:mad: ). anyway… if we are baptized & refrain from sin (as i more or less did when very young), i guess we are kind of “perfect” since God made us… but of course “growing up”… (sin) changes all that…

No wonder Jesus said we must become like little children in order to enter the kingdom of Heaven.
