With all of the questions over what the East is and the arguments over what the East should be, I thought this might be a good time for a book study. We could choose a book to read together and discuss it along the way, sharing our ideas on the ups and downs, implications, surprises, questions, etc.

What do you think?

Sounds interesting…What books did you have in mind?

Prayers and Petitions,
Alexius

Here are some books which have been recommended here in the past. It is in no way exhaustive of the possibilities, so recommend other books if you have one in mind.

Light For Life
Part One: The Mystery Believed
Part Two: The Mystery Celebrated
Part Three: The Mystery Lived

The Eyes Of The Gospel: Introduction To The Spirituality of the Eastern Church by Archbishop Joseph Raya

Byzantine Church and Culture by Archbishop Joseph Raya

The Face of God by Archbishop Joseph Raya

Are We All Schismatics? (Or, We Are All Scismatics) by Archbishop Elias Zoghby

Anything from Madonna House Publications

A Voice From the Byzantine East by Archbishop Elias Zoghby

American Eastern Catholics by Fred Saato

Introduction to Eastern Christian Spirituality: The Syriac Tradition by Chorbishop Seely Beggiani

Captivated By Your Teachings by Father Anthony Salim

The Lord’s Prayer and/or Beatitudes by St. Gregory of Nyssa

The Triads by St. Gregory Palamas

The following books are all available through Theological Book Service and have facilitator guides available. If one of these is chosen, I could see about getting an experienced facilitator to lead us through the book.

Stream of Living Water: An Introduction to Holy Tradition

Life and Worship: An Introduction to Eastern Theology

Shown to be Holy: An Introduction to Eastern Moral Thought

To the Ends of the Earth: Aspects of Eastern Catholic Church History

With Eyes of Faith: An Introduction to Eastern Theology

Inexhaustible Delights The Holy Mysteries in the Byzantine Churches

The Old Testament: A Byzantine Perspective

The Holy Gospel: A Byzantine Perspective

The Apostolic Writings: A Byzantine Perspective

I would be more interested still in more ECF/Patristic writings… But would consider from the above.

The eyes of the Gospel looks interesting.🙂

Is there a book about the magi?

Do you mean this one?

** With Eyes of Faith: An Introduction to Eastern Theology **
A basic introduction to the major dogmatic themes of Eastern theology as expressed in the Nicene Creed and presented in the Church Fathers and liturgical texts.

I’m sure there is an ECF about the Magi. I think if we’re going to do something spiritual or ECF related, one about Pascha would be more appropriate considering we’re about to enter the Great Fast, with this Sunday already being the Publican and the Pharisee. The first Sunday of Lent is March 2, which would give us just enough time to agree and get books.

My priest gave me a copy of “Captivated by Your Teachings” and I’m half way through. It’s a great book, and a great introduction into the Syriac-Maronite practices and theology. Although, much of it assumes you know a good bit already, which I don’t. 😛

Still learning, and hoping to be an Eastern Catholic one day!

I would like to do this, if you organize it. Please include me.🙂

** I could agree on a book of Pascha study, did you list one?
I’m sure our study could extend and be supplemented with other materials or references.**
