What do you think of the Eastern Orthodox? When someone mentions them, how do you react?

They’re the closest to Catholicism of all the non Catholic faiths and I hope for union. Thats about it

I can’t speak for how I feel about all the various churches comprising the Eastern Orthodox, but as far as the one I’ve experienced, which is Greek Orthodox, I am grateful they have retained such a beautiful Divine Liturgy, and although I will not be able to receive the Eucharist there (probably not in my lifetime), I am happy that I can at least participate in the Liturgy frequently.

Although I will remain Catholic, probably more and more Eastern Catholic as time goes on, I can’t imagine not feeling very warmly about the Eastern Orthodox.

The Catholic Church, comprising of the Latin Rite and 23 sui jurisChurches in union therewith, IS orthodox in every manner.

I’ve been one Divine Liturgy and loved it. I admire the Orthodox devotion to prayer and how they have kept the beauty of their liturgy.

Why so bitter? You really didn’t answer the original thread.

Orthodox or Eastern Orthodox does not imply anything regarding union or lack thereof between the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Bishop of Rome. It’s just the Orthodox have not changed anything since the days of the apostles. That’s why they’re called Orthodox…from the Greek words orthos and doxa.

I respect them and I know they have true sacraments. The Orthodox people I have known, I feel about them as I do Catholics. I wish the Patriarchs were in union with the Pope.

I think the split between East and West was truly sad and one of the greatest mistakes on both sides. For Christ’s sake, we need to reunify.

Many Catholics (Latin-Rite mainly) fail to understand that the Catholic Church is not Roman. It was, as it is now, a Communion of Churches, with varying traditions, devotions and practices. The split was entirely idiotic, in my opinion, and based on politics more than almost anything else. Theology was later used to justify it, even though both East and West believed exactly the same, just expressed it differently.

The same is true today. Both believe the same, just express it
differently. The East talks of the Soul having to go through more after death in order to enter into Heaven, Western Catholics call this Purgatory. It bothers me how both parties try to prove the other wrong on various issues. There is little difference dogmatically and doctrinally. Both parties just think their view of it is better.

I’m hoping we can all get off our high horses and reunite for Christ’s sake. It kills me inside to immagine Christ in Heaven looking down upon us, crying because of our arrogance in His name.

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I simply lost track of this thread, and it took a long time to relocate it. NOW, I know how to do so.

I’m not at all bitter. I’m distressed, though, by the implication that the Catholic Church, with all of its constituent parts, could be categorized as anything less than orthodox. Together with the Eastern Churches not in communion with Rome, our theology is mostly identical.
