I think the split between East and West was truly sad and one of the greatest mistakes on both sides. For Christ’s sake, we need to reunify.
Many Catholics (Latin-Rite mainly) fail to understand that the Catholic Church is not Roman. It was, as it is now, a Communion of Churches, with varying traditions, devotions and practices. The split was entirely idiotic, in my opinion, and based on politics more than almost anything else. Theology was later used to justify it, even though both East and West believed
exactly the same, just expressed it differently.
The same is true today. Both believe the same, just express it
differently. The East talks of the Soul having to go through more after death in order to enter into Heaven, Western Catholics call this Purgatory. It bothers me how both parties try to prove the other wrong on various issues. There is little difference dogmatically and doctrinally. Both parties just think their view of it is better.
I’m hoping we can all get off our high horses and reunite for Christ’s sake. It kills me inside to immagine Christ in Heaven looking down upon us, crying because of our arrogance in His name.
A good video describes this that I found on Youtube. I think it was made by a member here.
what really caused the split
