Actually, having responded to the thread once already, he has automatically subscribed to it. If he did what you told him to do, he will make himself unsubscribed! :rotfl:

Too bad. It is an interesting debate. I posted it here because I thought other people would be interested to listen to it as well.

I’ve listened to it before.

In this “debate” the Catholic participant seems to get the better of Mr. Slick, but he fails at one point to ask the right question…

It’s a good listen.
SF,

I think I read somewhere that you came here from the CARM Forums. Honestly, what’s your opinion of Matt Slick’s take on Catholicism. Just curious.

I don’t agree with it.

I believe the Catholic Church to be a Christian Church and Catholic Christians to be Christians.

Hey you should have titled your thread

"Bonocore vs. Slick Debate" rather than “What do you think of this?” Please be more specific next time! I almost missed this thread! 😃

Nice debate, problem is they were all over the map! Bonocore is great, many of his articles are on my site. He is pretty good at keeping up with Slick’s (mis)interpretation of Catholic teaching.

I’d say Bonocore won that exchange, but I’m biased. Slick clearly doesn’t try to understand Catholic teaching, he likes to pull things out and interpret them in light of his Calvinism.

Next time they should narrow the topic down to just sola scriptura or the nature and authority of the Church, etc and each spend a couple of minutes presenting their case first. Then they can interact with the back and forth later. But it was fun listening anyway…

You may be right; but I had a slightly ulterior motive for posting that thread! That is probably what influenced me in the choice of the title. I didn’t want to name the participants in the title of the thread. I posted it partly in order to send a subtle message to Karin. She has gone to the CARM forums and joined the Slick crowd out there, and started chiming in with them telling LDS that they are not Christians! I wanted her to know who were the crowd she was chiming in with. But I think she figured, and that is why she wouldn’t answer my question!

That was Matt’s decision. He was the host, and was conducting the debate. He dictated the direction it took. Bonocore was the caller, and was just responding to Matt’s questions.

Well, if you are interested, here is the continuation of that debate. This time they are focusing on sola scriptura!:

On second thought, I would say that that was a very unfair kind of debate. Matt Slick wouldn’t let the other guy talk. He was constantly shouting him down and talking over his head. He knows he doesn’t have winning argument, so he tries to prevail by shouting the other guy down. My advice to Bonocore would be not to continue with that debate. It diminishes his stature to do so. If he wants to debate with Matt Slick, the right way to do it is to do so in a situation in which there is an independent arbiter who can arbiterate between the two and allows each to have his say. It puts you in a great disadvantage if you are debating with someone in a situation in which your protagonist and the show host are one and the same, because he gets to call all the shots, and prevents you from having a fair chance. If any of you guys know Bonocore advise him not to continue with that debate, unless it is in a setting where Matt Slick does not have the chance to call all the shots. This Bonocore fellow appears to be nice guy, and I am getting to like him. He shouldn’t allow himself to be put at such a disadvantage like that. Matt Slick is not a fair debater.

By your leaders own words (the same ones I have posted on CARM and can repost here if you like) mormons are not Christians. Am I not supposed to use your leaders words to refute a claim mormons make?
If you want to send me a message may I suggest that you PM me…may I also suggest that you review forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=80801😃

Also here is what I posted…you can clearly see that your leaders are stating they are not Christians…it is not something that I made up Z.
Are Mormons Christian?
Let’s see what Mormon leaders say…

  • Brigham Young said that the “Christian God is the Mormon’s Devil…” (Journal of Discourses, Volume 5, page 331).
  • John Taylor said that Christianity was “hatched in hell” (Journal of Discourses, Volume 6, page 176) and “a perfect pack of nonsense…the Devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work…” (Journal of Discourses, Volume 6, page 167).
  • Bruce R. McConkie said, “What is the church of the devil in our day, and where is the seat of her power?.. It is all of the systems, both Christian and non-Christian, that perverted the pure and perfect gospel… It is communism; it is Islam; it is Buddhism; it is modern Christianity in all its parts. It is Germany under Hitler, Russia under Stalin, and Italy under Mussolini.” (The Millennial Messiah, pp. 54-55.) SOURCE

And by the same arguments used on CARM neither are the Catholics, so that makes us even I guess. 😃

The truth hurts, I know! 🙂

and we are not on CARM…so here on Catholic Forums, Catholics are Christians 🙂 also on CARM the issue was “are mormons Christians” if I recall that was the thread title and the forum was Mormoms… the argument you had on CARM holds NO water here Z…attempt it and see how fast you get shot down!

what truth Z? That your leaders have left you with nothing to dig out of your hole but personal attacks? Your going to have to do better than that:p

Also Z one more time ( I have suggested this several times to you) …if you have a personal issue with me may I suggest that you either PM or email me…
any further personal attacks against me and I will notify the MOD’s;)

Two answers to that. Firstly, quoting a bunch of stuff out of context from an anti-Mormon website is not worth the paper it is written on. Secondly, we come back to the same argument again. Those same websites who say all that kind of thing use the same arguments to argue that the Catholic Church is not Christian either. You can’t have your cake and eat it. If the argument is valid about the Mormons, it is equally valid about Catholics. You have to make up your mind which side of the fence you want to jump. You can’t have one foot in Catholicism and the other in Evangelicalism. You need very long legs to be able to do that. They are way too far appart.

I have made no personal attacks. Posting a thread with Bonocore vs Slick debate in it, and then saying that the intended recepient of the message was you is not a personal attack.

LOL!
I do not have one foot in EVANs and another in Catholicism…I have both firmly planted in the Catholic Church:D …posting on a forum that is EVAN and stating that LDS are not Christian does not conflict with my religion.
The argument against LDS is valid and has no bearing against the Catholic Church…LDS has proven itself not to be Christian by what its leaders state and by what it practices.
Now in regards to your leaders stating that they are not Christian…I did also provide the sources of these comments (the ones made by LDS leaders) may I suggest that you look them up and then see who is right? That website uses LDS sources to prove that your cult is not Christian…I guess we should not use LDS sources against Mormons!!!

I am sure it doesn’t. But when the same kind of reasinings are used by them to say that Catholicism is not Christian and Mormonism is not Christian, it is double standards to say it is valid when applied in one case and invalid when applied in the other

Our leaders have said or done no such thing.

Okay, I will check the sources and come back to you later. I don’t have the JoD hand, so I will have to find a good source on the Internet to check and tell you the result.
