Minn. mom fights church ban on her autistic son

BERTHA, Minn. (AP) – Carol Race thinks it’s important for her 13-year-old son to be in church on Sundays for Catholic Mass.

Leaders of the Church of St. Joseph once felt the same way, but not anymore. They say Race’s autistic son Adam is disruptive and his erratic behavior threatens the safety of other parishioners.

The northern Minnesota church has obtained a restraining order to keep Adam away, an action that has been deeply hurtful to the Race family and has brought them support from parents of other autistic children.

Should he be allowed to attend Mass?

In court papers, church leaders say the danger is real. The Rev. Daniel Walz wrote in his petition for the restraining order that Adam - who already is more than 6 feet tall and weighs more than 225 pounds - has hit a child, has nearly knocked over elderly parishioners while bolting from his pew, has spit at people and has urinated in the church.

“His behavior at Mass is extremely disruptive and dangerous,” wrote Walz. “Adam is 13 and growing, so his behaviors grow increasingly difficult for his parents to manage.”

The family’s home in nearby Eagle Bend has separate study rooms so the other children can read books and use crayons that Adam could otherwise destroy.

Adam is prone to anxiety attacks. Carol said some of those outbursts force members of the family to sit on him to calm him down, or restrain his hands and feet with a strip of felt.
In his court petition, Walz said that after one service Adam got into another family’s car, started it and revved up the engine while there were people in front of the vehicle.

I think the child in a Mans body is dangerious, that Mom is in denial, and that Mom should go to Jail for violating the court order.

And, Yes I think the child in a 225 lb body should be kept out of mass for the safety of others.

The initial Main Street Plaza suit came after the city sold a block of Main Street to the LDS Church in 1999 for $8.1 million. In that sale the city reserved a public-access easement across the plaza but gave the church the authority to prohibit protests and proselytizing, certain dress and other things the LDS Church finds offensive.

The ACLU of Utah sued Salt Lake City over the restrictions, and the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the city cannot have public access on the plaza while forbidding certain types of speech there.

Now dog, don’t change the subject of the thread. It is not about the lds church but whether one should be denied the ability to attend Mass.

She thinks that her son should not be denied attending Mass. Personally, she should realize that her son disrupts the Mass for all the others who are attending and makes the Mass experience counterproductive. But since she believes that her son has the right to attend church, the question remains: does the church have the right to ban her son from Mass?

The child’s mother was given several options - such as remote line-feed, private mass, etc. All offers were rejected by the mother. The Church has tried jumping through hoops for this unbending parent.

Also, I believe canon law does not require this child to attend weekly Mass because of his medical condition.

I’m confused. This thread is crazy. It sounds like the subject has already been discussed. Then it looks like another topic is drawn in the middle of this one. So I assume now that there is some sort of conflict going on in here.

I will address on ly the story of the huge man that is apparently mentally impaired and a danger posibly to society. I wonder if he should actually be in a home for special needs people so as to remove the real danger from society.

If the parish or diocese banned the man from being present at a parish or more, then they must have good reason. They would not do this unless the situation dictated the need.

I think that it is an interesting case: should autism prevent someone from attending Mass if that autism is disruptive? It is a tricky question. And what action can be taken by the parish if the mom continues to defy the order?
