I recently mentioned to a friend that I wanted to help out those in need in a more substantal way. As well as wishing to find a seminarian who could use some help.

My friend pointed me to www.cyberbeg.com.

What do you think of giving money in this way?

It could be chancy giving through such a website. If I were you, I’d contact your local seminary to ask how to give to their vocations program.

But giving to a vocations program does not mean that the money gets to a seminarian who could use it.

I know some dioceses give their seminarians a stipend, some do not. Some parishes send money to those seminiarians who have come from their parish, some do not. The KoC send some seminiarians money

Many seminarians get no help at all.

I would avoid this site like the plague! Did you see the one with the woman that needed a “HEPTERECTONY”. I clicked on the “Start Begging Now” button and it said it would only take me a minute to create an account. Why don’t you ask a priest how to help?

most religious orders have a program called a burse, to which you can contribute for a specific seminarian, or to a general scholarship fund. I imagine diocesan seminaries have similar programs.

From my experience any such thing stays with the group (religious order or diocese) and is used to pay for the education (or part of the education in the case of a diocese) and nothing is given to the seminarian for day to day needs.

Heck, every diocese I was in contact with only pays for half of the seminary education and nothing of the undergraduate degree. So the diocesan seminarian needs a student loan for his undergraduate work and then owes the diocese for half of his seminary education. That does not leave a lot left over.

If you designate your donation for those seminarians in most need of help, it will be used for that, I’m sure.

Also, you can contribute to the KoC “RSVP” program, which is used to help seminarians from local parishes.

I believe that he is right. From what I have been told any money given to the diocese is used to pay for the education (the half the the diocese pays for). It does not pass any along to the seminarian (even if one is designated) because the diocese does not see it as fair to give more money to one than the others.
