It seems prayer still upsets some people. Please read…

When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas
Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what
they heard;

"Heavenly Father,
We come before you today
To ask your forgiveness and
To seek your direction and guidance.

We know Your Word says,
“Woe to those who call evil good”
But that is exactly what we have done.

We have lost our spiritual equilibrium
And reversed our values.

We have exploited the poor and
Called it the lottery.

We have rewarded laziness
And called it welfare.

We have killed our unborn and called it choice.

We have shot abortionists
And called it justifiable.

We have neglected to discipline
Our children and called it
Building self esteem.

We have abused power
And called it politics.

We have coveted our neighbor’s
Possessions and called it ambition.

We have polluted the air
With profanity and
Pornography and called it
Freedom of speech and expression.

We have ridiculed the time
Honored values of our
Forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God,
And know our hearts today;
Cleanse us from every sin
And set us free.
Amen!"

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked
Out during the prayer in protest.

In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor,
logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47
Of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving
international requests for copies of this prayer from India , Africa and
Korea .

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio
Program, “The Rest of the Story,” and received a larger response to this
program than any other he has ever aired.
With the Lord’s help, may this prayer sweep over our
Nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called
“one nation under God.”

If possible, please pass this prayer on to your friends.
“If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”

Think about this: If you forward this prayer to everyone
On your email list, in less than 30 days it would be heard by
The world.

That is a wonderful prayer. It is so appropriate for our times. I will send it to my friends.

I sent it to everyone on my e-mail list. I thought I should put it here as well.😃

Refreshing for a change:thumbsup:

I agree with most of the prayer, but I find these two lines a bit too generalized:
We have exploited the poor and
Called it the lottery.
We have rewarded laziness
And called it welfare.
Not everyone who plays the lottery is poor, and in my state at least, those who cannot afford to play are discourged with PAs on TV. And not everyone on welfare is lazy. There are a lot of people who need publis assistance, from time to time. My own dh is currently collecting unemployment as he goes to interviews and applies for work. I think the pastor should have thought through this part of his prayer or worded it in such a way as to acknowledge these realities.

Hi,
I wasnt sure what he meant about the lottery thing but I have to tell you there are many many people who take advantage of welfare. It is too bad that they ruin it for people who really dont want to be on it and do work hard to get out of it.😦

Yes, there are people who are not poor that play the lottery. But at least in my city, the poor neighborhoods have more lottery sales counters, and the billboards advertising the lottery are more prevalent in poor neighborhoods. The so-called convenience stores that sell lottery tickets, liquor and a little bit of over-priced stale food tend to be in poor neighborhoods. So I think the pastor was right.

Whether or not there are people taking advatage of welfare is not a good defense for him to claim laziness as the reason for someone to be on it.

I really wonder about the teenage girl who decided to keep her baby rather than abort who is on it and what she thinks about it. Especially if her parents/her Church provided her with no help and her family kicked her out when they found out she was knocked up.

How about those with disabilities?

I dont know, but to say “laziness” like that makes me think this man has been blessed with never knowing in his life of anyone personally who has had unfortunate circumstances befall them and turns a blind eye to those who most likely his own church also ignores as well.

Yes I hear what you are saying. I run a homeless ministry in my church and about 90% of the people want to get out of the system and are motivated to do so. About 60% of these people are children:( The other 10% are the people this man is speaking of. It takes such a small amount of people to ruin it for the rest.😦

And if only this man’s words reflected the reality you speak of…

instead, they encourage us to ignore those people and write off those good people as lazy.

I cant forward/promote such a sterotype that is also very unchristian in nature towards some others, as you say who are children of all people! Sorry.

I will pray this man re-thinks the wording on his prayer so as not to hurt people while “making his case for christ”

I think it’s a good example of what God can do when we stop compromising and watering everything down amen?

What you speak of is not welfare, but charity. And your statistics are justification that Church based charity is ‘better’ than state run welfare.

The irony is that this thread is in the “social justice” arena.

I think its horrible that all of these things are lumped in.

I recieve free heath insurance from the governemt. I work two jobs during the school year, I’m a full time student, and I voulenteer for the community over 150 hours a year.

I don’t have parents as many college-aged kids do, so I need extra help…without it I’d probably of lost my hearing when I had a horrible ear infection earlier this year…I wouldn’t have the money to get it treated and I don’t have a parent to make sure of it.

I’m not lazy but there are certian things I can’t provide for myself yet.

And “self esteem” is not the reason kids are messed up today…grrrr…

God bless you Meggie, and what an example you are for my child! I would rather not say on a forum but I am very worried about my child having 2 parents for much longer (through her childhood) due to health concerns.:crying: We have a small family, and no one is close.

And this is always on my mind.

You are a gift from God, thank you for your witness here!🙂

I must qualify what I am going to say as I know that some may make assumptions; I am not implying that what you have done is wrong in any way.

My post is about how you say it. The government is us. It would be more accurate to say that you receive free health insurance from tax payers, which may include yourself. The government is not a faceless resource that can choose to give from its own resources. All value dispensed by the government has come directly from the works and resources of its citizens.

I say it was out of line. He was there to offer a prayer…not to make a political statement. Maybe if he chooses to do so he should run for office and then he would have the opportunity to make political comments. Way out of line IMO…

I assume that what you mean is that he should not have spoken in any way to offend anyone, not to call attention to any of the sins of society. We are asked by God to use our talents to the greatest glory of Him, in all things. I am not sure that God was calling him to be silent about our society’s atrocities.

We are called to be like Christ. What would He have done? I’m afraid that He would have offended them by the truth, just as He did 2000 years ago. Perhaps this man did not offend them enough. Jesus’ contemporaries put him to death for what he said. All that happened here was some lawmakers walked out (like many Jews), and some people think he was out of line, like he was being rude or something.
