What do you think the Nephilim were?

The Sons of God were disobedient angels who mated with women and animals and corrupted all flesh. That’s why God had to wipe out everything, including the animals. These are the angels mentioned in Jude 6-8:
And the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling have been kept by him in eternal chains in the nether gloom until the judgment of the great day; just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
These angels didn’t stick to God’s plan, and just like Sodom and Gomorrah, “indulged in unnatural lust.”

The Book of Enoch spells this out more clearly.

In Sodom’s case, yes, it was homosexuality. But the point here is that there was lust for something that was unnatural to them; lusting after forbidden fruit. For the Sodomites, it was other men. For angels, it’s humans.

Given that that is a theory for where Cain and Seth got wives I consider that a real possibility.

These unions created tall and hardy men. It didn’t take much to be considered giant, people were short.

One of the more intriguing passages in the Bible is Genesis 6:1-4. What do you think the ‘sons of God’ were?
The Nephilim are the same as the Titans of Greek mythology. Mention of them occurs in other traditions (e.g. South Asian) also, under different names. They were some tall race, probably quite distinct from humans. Somehow they were defeated or ousted (from the planet) by another race, possibly our ancestors.

Very true. They probably can’t eat either. The angel Raphael says: ‘All these days I merely appeared to you and did not eat or drink, but you were seeing a vision.’ Tobit 12:19

If we assumed that to be the correct path for explanation, I would put for gigantopithecus.

The world was divided in two at the time. A matriarchy and a patriarchy. The children of both would make a one of the whole world. They could easily use that to their personal advantage. They would have knowledge, access and power no one else had. They would encompass all humanity in their selves.

Actually, the sons of Seth are called sons of God.

Nephilim are the fruit of the fallen sons of Seth with the sons of Cain.

Furthermore, as (name removed by moderator) said, it is a literary device. They meaning I get from old hebrew is that they were bad man who put themselves above God.

Where?

Anyway I now lean towards the fallen angel view for the reason that they were giants, over 9ft tall with no health problems. In fact goliath was a terrifying warrior. Also an ugaritic term cognate refers to gods, as does Bene HaElohim in Deuteronomy 32:8.
