What does anybody out there know about the book called Joshua (a parable for today) , from what I’ve seen – I’m thinking it’s not a very good book

Here’s the situation , when I was visiting my parents out of State over the weekend , my Mother gave me a couple books to borrow , the impression I got was that she had already read them and was sort of passing them on to me to read. To give you some background my Mom is a cradle Catholic and not an overly religious person , but I think since she has seen me become more and more interested and outspoken about things related to the Faith over like the last 6 years or so , she has also started to develop more of an interest herself. I haven’t read it yet , but the book appears to have been written by an ex-priest ( Joseph F. Girzone )who seems to have turned on the Church , it appears to me at this point that the content of the book , in a subtle way , contains a lot of disparaging thinks about our Catholic faith. Is there anybody out there who knows about this book and can either confirm or deny my suspicions ? Also , let’s say I’m correct and the book is absolutely not worth spending any amount of time on , what would be some recommendations for how to approach that with my Mom ? ( in the sense that I don’t want to sound un-grateful or that I’m just like so smart and know everything )

Is your faith so weak that reading a book is a threat?

If so, then let your mother know.

If not, your mother wanted you to read the book. - Read the book.

if the book is by a heretical priest, i say dont bother with it, there is one truth, that of Christ through the Church he founded. someone willing to speak against it publicly, is speaking against Christ and is anathema to our Faith. He that would stand against us, stands against Christ. pay the heathen no mind.

now, obviously you cant say that to your mother, but as i say to mine who does similar things, my first and only loyalty is to Christ and by extension His Church, we are not to believe as we wish, we do not have the freedom to decide that which is right from that which is wrong in such matters, it is ours to be obedient, to place our trust fully and completely in Christ. not to trust in ourselves, or our ability to know right from wrong. 🙂

I read that book a very long time ago and recognized that there was some denigration of things Catholic towards the end of the book. I would not recommend it to anyone.

I also noticed that a very good Catholic bookstore in my area will not carry the books of that author.

Father Joseph Jenkins addresses Joseph Girzone’s writings.

This thread would be a better fit in spirituality.

I read the book, it was not very moving. The whole thing is very underplayed. Not being catholic I didn’t know it was a great threat to catholicism. In my oppinion, the writer lacked imagination…

Agreed. There is no reason to waste any time on those books (there is a series of Joshua books) or anything by that author. Look for good Catholic novels which uphold the faith – there are many of those.

It’s good to know that they won’t carry those books. I think the author has mislead many people – he portrays a false Catholicism and has animosity towards the teaching of the Church.

heretical priest is quite Judgmental! For a Man to dedicate his life to Jesus Christ is something to admire. I do not know why Joseph Girzone left the Priesthood, but I’m sad to see people comdem a man. I went to seminary myself and left, but it’s better to try and find your calling then to critize others.

I read Joseph Girzone’s books and my faith was enriched and touched my Spirit. It’s Sad that you will limit how God can touch your Spirit. Open your mind and read his book.

A warm welcome to the forum! 🙂

In what ways has your faith been enriched by his books?
