What does Catholicism say about God?

Charlie,

I have actually been on previous as Katgee…remember references to ‘Sister Amy’ and having been on some excruciatingly frustrating and demeaning threads with Muslims, I do see her questions as a ruse to vent.

There is alot of agitation coming from the Muslim world to start war now.

We believe that God is the Creator of all things, of Heaven and earth. He is infinitely greater than us, but we can know Him, because the abyss between Creator and creature has been filled by His mercy. We believe that God’s love and mercy is possibly His greatest attribute. God is love.

There is only one God, but He exists in three Persons: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. They all love each other and that is why God is love. He made the world and made us to be in relationship with Him, and to receive His love, and give ourselves to Him in return.

We should fear to offend God, and approach Him with reverence, but also with love and confidence. We have nothing to fear from Him if we repent of our sins, because God is our Father.

We know God through His Son Jesus, because He became a Man and took on human nature… Jesus is fully God and fully Man. Because of our sins, we were all separated from God, and couldn’t reach Him despite our best efforts. He knew this, and in His love, reached down to us by uniting Himself with our human nature and destroying sin on the Cross. Now, we can know God the Father, through Christ, and we can live forever in Him just as He lives forever.

We can talk to God in any way we want, and there are also prayers that the Church gives us so we know the right things to pray for.

We worship God in response to His love. We can worship Him at Mass, where Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. In addition to this, we serve Him in our lives by following His teachings. Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God, and to love our neighbour as ourselves.

How has “He” loved us?

I wanted to also explain why the Incarnation (God becoming man) was necessary.

After Adam and Eve fell, the human race became separated from God. We owed a debt to Him for our sins. Justice requires that a human should pay this debt, but no sacrifice we can give is a worthy one. Only God could rescue us from this condition, but He’s sinless and not a human. In addition, this sacrifice needs to be blood, because in the Old Testament, they sacrificed animals for the forgiveness of sins.

the best solution was for God to take on human nature, and offer Himself as a worthy sacrifice to save the human race. It’s just like the lamb being slaughtered in the Old Testament… only infinitely greater. We call Christ the Lamb of God. Through taking on a human nature, He united human nature to Himself, and through His death on the Cross, He destroyed sin and death. He then rose again on the 3rd day, and this was witnessed by many people and documented.

Through repenting of our sins and following Jesus, we can come to God the Father and our sins can be forgiven, through His sacrifice. In this way we can go to Heaven and live with God forever. Heaven for us is union with God, which is the greatest love and joy that anyone could experience.

In the Mass, we receive Jesus in the Eucharist (Communion). Though it looks like bread and wine, we believe it’s actually Jesus’ Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. The Holy Spirit transforms the bread and wine into Him when the priest says the Consecration. In Communion, we experience a bit of Heaven because it’s also union with God.

So are you asking for forgiveness, or just dismissing the anger? I’m curious to know.

How does the respect manifest if you imagine Him standing right in front of you? Do you feel like bowing or anything out of respect or honor?

God delivered many commandments to Moses, not just the 10. What makes those 10 special? Why those and not others, if no others? If others, which of them?

How has “He” loved us?

I in fact have my own answers to the questions but they aren’t exactly relevant at the moment, while I’m trying to discuss the Catholic perspective.

I say sorry to Him for my anger for the same reason I say sorry to my earthly parents … to acknowledge my sin, and hope He forgives me

Imagining Him in front of me isn’t to manifest anything, it is just a way of being able to “see” Him

I am sure there are many threads and writings on catholic.com that will answer why the 10 Commandments are so important.
