What does Eastern Catholic Lent start?

Just as the title says when does it begin?

(also I always get the calendars confused, but I mean the same calendar that the Russian Catholics or Russian Orthodox follow…so the one that’s different from the Roman Catholic calendar)

Actually earlier… after Vespers on Forgiveness Sunday. Well, maybe you meant that Monday begins with Vespers.

I believe that you already got your answers. I belong to Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and for us the lent started today. Today was our “ash wednessday” but we don’t call it using the name of the day “Wednesday”.

I don’t have a parish in my rite so I can’t really tell when it’s the Great Fast based on liturgy.

Am I right in understanding that:

• Roman Catholics: start Lent on Ash Wednesday (this Wednesday)
• Eastern Catholics/Orthodox who follow the Gregorian calendar: start Lent this Monday (today)
• Eastern Catholics/Orthodox who follow the Julian calendar (like the Russian Orthodox/Catholics) start Lent next Monday ?

So for Monica an easy way to remember,( for the Gregorian calender anyway) would be the Monday before Ash Wednesday

Only the Maronites practice the Imposition of Ashes, albeit two days earlier on Clean Monday. Some refer to this as Ash Monday, as a consequence. Maronite Catholics are unique in this regard among Eastern Catholics.

I’m glad you’re not just lurking

I went to Mass today at the Dominican priory. The guys were all dressed up with their black cappas. The deacon also had on a lovely dalmatic, matching the celebrant’s chasuble. Not the usual daily Mass garb. It was nice! Unlike every other Latin Church around here where it’s usually standing room only on this not-a-holyday-of-oblitgation, it was just the usual crowd at the Priory. I didn’t go up for ashes.

We did burn our palms last night in RCIA for ashes at that parish today.
