Just as the title says šŸ™‚ when does it begin?

(also I always get the calendars confused, but I mean the same calendar that the Russian Catholics or Russian Orthodox follow…so the one that’s different from the Roman Catholic calendar)

This Monday for those following the Gregorian, the following Monday for those on the Julian.

40 consecutive days beginning Clean Monday. Then Holy Week or Passion Week follows, also with another week of fasting/abstinence.

If you are an Eastern Christian, you know its Great Lent when you start reciting the Prayer of St. Ephrem:
Lord and Master of my life,
spare me from the spirit of indifference, despair,
lust for power, and idle chatter.
Instead, bestow on me, your servant,
the spirit of integrity, humility,
patience, and love.
Yes, O Lord and King,
let me see my own sins
and not judge my brothers and sisters;
for you are blessed forever and ever. Amen.
Have a blessed and spiritual Lenten journey!

From the Antiochian Orthodox, fast begins at midnight Clean Monday rather than immediately after the Forgiveness Sunday Vespers.**

A Note about Fasing:** There are two distinct types of fasts: an Ascetical Fast and a Eucharistic Fast. An ASCETICAL FAST (meaning a day or season when we abstain from certain foods, drinks and activities) begins at the midnight preceding the fast day (or the first day of the fasting season) and ends at the following midnight (or that of the final day of the fasting season). For example, the usual Wednesday fast begins at midnight on Tuesday and ends at midnight on Wednesday; likewise, the usual Friday fast begins at midnight on Thursday and ends at midnight on Friday. The Apostles Fast, a fasting season of variable duration, begins at midnight on All Saints Sunday and ends at midnight on June 28th; likewise, the Dormition Fast begins at midnight on July 31st and ends at midnight on August 14th, and the Nativity Fast begins at midnight on November 14th and ends at midnight on December 24th. The Great Fast (which includes both the Forty Days and Holy Week) begins at midnight on Forgiveness Sunday (not immediately following Forgiveness Vespers) and ends at midnight on Great and Holy Saturday.

Hi,

I believe that you already got your answers. I belong to Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and for us the lent started today. Today was our ā€œash wednessdayā€ but we don’t call it using the name of the day ā€œWednesdayā€.

thanks everyone! šŸ™‚

I don’t have a parish in my rite so I can’t really tell when it’s the Great Fast based on liturgy.

Am I right in understanding that:
  • Roman Catholics: start Lent on Ash Wednesday (this Wednesday)
  • Eastern Catholics/Orthodox who follow the Gregorian calendar: start Lent this Monday (today)
  • Eastern Catholics/Orthodox who follow the Julian calendar (like the Russian Orthodox/Catholics) start Lent next Monday ?
God bless šŸ™‚

That is correct! May you have a spiritually rewarding Lenten journey!

So for Monica an easy way to remember,( for the Gregorian calender anyway) would be the Monday before Ash Wednesday:)

Question please…

Eastern Catholics ~ Orthodox who follow the Julian calendar start Lent next Monday which is also called Clean Monday.

Do Eastern Catholics also receive ashes two days later on that Wednesday or is that a RC practice…?

Only the Maronites practice the Imposition of Ashes, albeit two days earlier on Clean Monday. Some refer to this as Ash Monday, as a consequence. Maronite Catholics are unique in this regard among Eastern Catholics.

Fascinating…!!!

Thank you…

All my life I’ve been exposed to only RC – however, here in CAF ā€œlurkingā€ on EC I’ve learned to much.

I’m glad you’re not just lurking šŸ™‚

I went to Mass today at the Dominican priory. The guys were all dressed up with their black cappas. The deacon also had on a lovely dalmatic, matching the celebrant’s chasuble. Not the usual daily Mass garb. It was nice! Unlike every other Latin Church around here where it’s usually standing room only on this not-a-holyday-of-oblitgation, it was just the usual crowd at the Priory. I didn’t go up for ashes.

We did burn our palms last night in RCIA for ashes at that parish today. šŸ‘
