Yes, particularly a mortal sin. Lack of charity as a result of a mortal sin can leave someone hardened and uncaring. The Catechism says (1855-1856) “Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God’s law; it turns man away from God…Venial sin alows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it. Mortal sin, by attacking the vital principle within us–that is, charity–necessitates a new initiative of God’s mercy and a conversion of heart, which is normally accomplished within the setting of the sacrament of reconciliation…”Alright -
Other then things becoming habitatual. Is it possible for sin to effect someones emotional state? Could someone simply stop caring, or become cold/hardened? Like a sociopath? (Note I say like sociopath, not that they are)
If so, how would you fix that? If it were someone you knew, how would you approach it?
There may be other causes for that beyond mortal sin, so be careful not to judge the state of someone’s soul. But if you suspect that a friend or relative may be in a state of mortal sin, encourage them to go to Confession if they are Catholic. If they aren’t Catholic, pray for and encourage their “conversion of heart”, (which may or may not involve conversion to the Catholic Church.) We can not fix the problems that result from sin, but God can–and Jesus established the Sacraments to help dispense His grace. Pray for God’s grace and mercy to convert hearts back to Him. Also pray for God’s guidance for yourself regarding how to best approach the situation.
