What does everyone's electric bill look for the summer...?

Oh barns…I see…you have a farm? I have always wanted to own a farm…! What type of farm do you own?🙂
It’s just a acreage- we own 5 acres of land, and just do gardening and small animal projects (as you can tell from my signature). I love it, and I would like to expand our gardens, etc., when time and money allow. Maybe when I’m 65 and retire (27 years from now).

Not sure, haven’t seen it!

Ours usually drops in the summer versus the winter, but I would still say that it hovers around $200 or so. We usually set the AC to about 71-74, depending upon the day. Granted we run ceiling fans (all 5) pretty much all day long.

When we lived in Houston our summer electic bill would often top $400.

wowowowowowow!!! That’s terrific! I don’t open the windows in Florida, like we did in PA–there are so many fruit flies and love bugs everywhere…so, it’s really a pain when they get through the teeny holes and die all over the carpet.:o Good for you that you can keep you bill low!!
Don’t hate me, but we don’t have bugs here. I’ve had my sliding glass door all the way open all day, and have had maybe one fly wander inside.

My garage, which I just cleaned out today, is totally full of Black Widows though. Eeek!

but that price includes the gas as well, our gas and electric is on the same bill. the bill was only $119 last month, I think! but the air during the day is on 74 at night I get hot since preggo, and then I usually wake up in the middle of the night sweating so I will turn it down to 72 but back up in the morning. I don’t like to be too hot but I don’t mind being cold…**

I also especially would like to hear from fellow Floridians…So far, we are using about $4 per day…that’s not bad, when you think about it. We do not have gas, so the electric is used for the dishwasher, stove, range, hot water, and a/c.

Just curious if you keep your a/c low, and run ceiling fans more…or do you run it high?
I’m in north central Nebraska…hot and muggy, my house is 1900 square feet, and part of that is a finished attic that is my daughter’s room…I run a separate a/c up there because it gets SO hot…so with that and the fact that my house is all electric, my bill runs about $200 per month in the summer, but I keep my house cool, around 72 degrees, so I don’t think $200 is too bad for such a low temp. I also sleep with the fan on all night, I need the white noise.

I did change all of my light bulbs to those high efficiency ones that look all coiled up AND I put everything on a power strip, so the television and all things that are plugged in (aside from the stove, microwave, and alarm clock get COMPLETELY turned off when we turn off the strip. This made a difference, my power bills were about $10 higher per month last year on average.

I would love love love this! But, my husband tells me…‘Sharon…you need to get up before 10 to run a farm…and you need to work hard…’

Oh, I tell him. LOL My mom grew up on a farm…I think that’s where the intrigure comes from.

Do you eat your own food, primarily???

Our gas/electric bill (they are billed together) for the winter was near to $350 or so. $400 ouch!!
Living in PA–same exact thing. They were separate bills…but if you totaled them…they were around $300-350. Gas was always always always higher.

No gas bills in Florida…I find that odd?

maybe I’m pregnant…this sounds like me. KIDDING.😃 I do get hot in the middle of the night, so we crank it lower to not wake up…

$119 isn’t too bad, though…for both, right?

I moved here from Maryland, and when I first got here I absolutely HATED that everything was electric. I miss cooking with gas! I don’t mind an electric dryer and water heater so much anymore, but I miss my gas stove and oven. There are some homes here in South Florida that have been converted to gas, but it is very very expensive to do.

On a practical note, it is definitely safer to have all electric when hurricanes and tropical storms come through. We don’t have to worry about pilot lights going out and gas build-up in the home. I’d hate to survive a hurricane only to have my house blow up!

Where I live the electric bill is combined with the water bill. They run about $200 a month–but in the summer most of that is water! I’m 6500 feet up, and with practically no humidity, I find ceiling fans adequate most of the time. Part of the reason is that because of the altitude our nights are cool even when it’s hot in the daytime (for example, the last two days have been 99-98, but the lows in the middle 40s)–add in humidity between 10%-15% and I generally only use the fans…

hi nmjenny;
what a drop in temps at night…wow…I like cooler nights, do you?

I would pile the blankets on and sleep with a window open every night! That sounds heavenly.

that does…but i’m afraid big bugs will crawl through the window here in FL if we do!!!😛 Now, in PA…we did sleep with our windows open…

…imagine sleeping with the windows open and you reside in a beach house…hmmm…the crashing waves…

…talk about heaven:heaven:

I have a garden, and of course we have eggs from the chickens. Beyond that, it’s grocery store food for us.

You, too? We moved down here from southern Maryland 4 years ago. Everything here seems expensive. The insurance and taxes especially. I’m looking forward to seeing the practical side of the new tax legislation. Anyway, our power bill is under $200 in the winter and over $400 in the summer. That’s with the a/c set at 77-78. When we first moved and I was not used to the heat, we kept it around 75-76 and had an even higher bill that shocked us  .

If you lived in Maryland you would be afraid to ask this question.
Gas and electic bills have gone up by 50% beginning this month.

With the blistering hot 90’s already in Chicago and my AC running full steam ahead…I can guarantee you that it will be more than we want. Also Chicago seems to have a big lead in the average cost per a gallon of gas for our cars. So it won’t be any surprise if we go no where on vacation.

I’m from Baltimore, so I was used to the miserable summers-- high heat and killer humidity–, but not the duration of summer. I mean really! How can summer last from February through November!!! LOL! Now, though, after being here for over 5 years, when the temps get down to “winter” temps of 65-70, it is downright COLD! (Although I do still find it hilarious that Albertsons sells cords of firewood for the one week we get temps in the 40-50 degree range!!)

I’m also curious to see how Gov. Crist’s tax and insurance plans will play out. I’ve heard many people say he will either be a hero or a he will bankrupt the state; there doesn’t seem to be much in between. I guess it will all depend on how many storms we have this year, and how much damage they do. Our home owner’s insurance went up a little, but the agent said he will give us that amount in discounts once we get the roof and hurricane shutters inspected. I know people whose insurance doubled or even tripled, without ever filing claims, so we got off very very lucky.

My goodness! I am so glad my family is getting out of Maryland! They’ve all moved (or are in the process of moving) up 83 a few miles into York County PA. What a difference in the cost of living between Baltimore county and York county. I believe things will only get worse in Maryland as far as taxes go with Martin O’malley as governor.

Anyway, this is way off topic, so I will stop.
