I’m not certain that the idea is purely that of money.
I think that it’s asking for Jesus to help us let go of our fears. One of these is the fear that, if I don’t run my life – that is, if I let go and trust in Jesus to lead me – then I’ll end up with less than if I just go at it myself. So, for examples:
perhaps I fear that, if I don’t drive my life…
I’ll have fewer opportunities for relationships
I’ll have fewer possessions
I’ll have less happiness
Especially for Americans, there’s a certain streak of self-reliance. In a sense, that’s a negative dynamic, since it says “no thanks, Jesus, I’m gonna do this on my own.”
