The address takes you to an interview with the leading Muslim in the UK.christianitytoday.com/ct/2005/105/22.0.html

Here is one of the questions:
You issued a fatwa some years ago sentencing the U.S. author of the “blasphemous” play Corpus Christi to death. What do you think of Christ?

In Islam, Jesus is called Al-Masih 'Isa [the Messiah Jesus]. He is a Messenger of Allah, miraculously born of the Virgin Mary. He spoke in the cradle, defended the message of previous prophets—Noah, Abraham, Moses, etc., preached the oneness of God, predicted the coming of a prophet called Ahmed *, he denied the Trinity and being Son of God.

He will return before the Day of Judgment, and will be a Sign of the Hour. He will judge between Muslims and Christians, abolish jihad because his presence will be the point of conflict with the Dajjal [Antichrist], who will fight, allied with Jews and false Christians, against the Mahdi [Rightly-Guided one expected in Islamic eschatology] and Jesus.

The fatwa against the author of Corpus Christi was because it was an attack on Jesus, which is the same as an attack on Muhammad and God. Muslims have a duty to defend Jesus.

Jesus and His Blessed Mother are revered in Islam.

It would be interesting to start a parallel thread exploring what Judaism teaches about Jesus and Mary.

Well Judaism doesn’t say much about them except in prophecies and symbolism.

To hear the next thing about Jesus from Judaism you’d have to turn to the Talmud.

And believe me… you don’t want to know what it said about either of them there…

😦

Unfortunately, I already do.

There are some things about their ideas about Jesus that is quite scary. They said he will come back before judgement day-Do they mean in the flesh? On the Earth. Is it me or are they describing the Anti-Christ?:eek:Who is supposed to say he is Jesus:eek:

Lisa, my understanding is that they hold Jesus in great esteem and believe he will come back to fight the anti-christ.

Muslims see Mohammed as the bridge between the harsh OT teachings of God and the Soft NT teachings of Jesus.

Muslims recognise all the Biblical figures we do, though they see Jesus as a prophet and not the son of God. They see Adam as the first Prophet and the last as Muhammad. In between, thousands of prophets came to the peoples who inhabited different lands in different periods of history. The Holy mentions by name only twenty five of these prophets, the most important are Abraham (Ibraheem), Moses (Moosa), Noah (Nooh), Jesus (Eesa) and Muhammad.
All these prophets of God taught basically the same message of Islam to their people. Islam means ‘Peace’ and also '‘submission to the will of God’.

A good friend of mine from the Middle East told me that some think that Islam came about when a priest tried to evangelise that part of the world, they took Christianity and altered it into Islam, involving the head god from their beliefs, Allah.

My favourite Muslim saying is

‘Trust in Allah, but always tie up your camel’

I also found reading ‘The Prophet’ by Kahlil Gibran helped me understand the Middle Eastern mind. He was a Christian from the Middle East (Lebanon). The book is a story about a wise man leaving a place for home. A lovely meld of Christian and Middle Eastern philosophy!

You can read it on line here. It’s only short and very enjoyable. I thought the teacher and the bit on marriage particularly touching.

Here is a Catholic Answers article which sheds much light on Islam catholic.com/library/endless_jihad.asp

And according to that, it seems that terrorism and the religion itself are intrically linked. Islam began on the Arabia peninsula in the 7th century and has since for the most part been spread violently.

God is God, but if Muslims and Jews do not recognise the 2nd person of the Trinity, The Christ, are they worshipping the one True God?

See Nostra Aetate from Vatican II and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Church tells us that they do indeed worship the one true God. They don’t recognize/understand His true nature as Christians do.

Technically if you ask me, all (well most) theistic religions give some credence to the same God (bear with me on this one a moment)…
Well rather they all believe in the creator God, but know Him by different names, which isn’t odd, different names are given to God in the Bible and just as we can have many forum accounts on the internet, possibly under different usernames, those all belong to the same person.

After the Tower of Babel incident, when the people split up, the confusion would cause some corruption in their understanding when they began to try and retain their beliefs, and as time went on their beliefs changed more and more, away from the truth. Which is why the ancient Chinese alphabet and words are symbolic of teh Genesis account and that at one point they have temples dedicated to one God. One of them is still there today.

Of course God got fed up with this and pulled Moses out of bed one day to set the record straight. So the world religions did have one common origin sometime in the past, indeed that is why we all share similar morals. It’s just that we claim to have all the facts! 😃

I remember reading that Islam could really have been influenced by the ideas of Gnosticism which claimed Jesus didn’t die or that His disciples hid the body etc.

Good point. Many theologians believe that Islam is really just a collosal Christian heresy. In reading some Islamic authors, I’ve noticed that many of them seem very concerned with not committing idolatry, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, they view Jesus as a mere creature; so in their view Christians are committing idolatry by worshipping him as true God.

The problem is not what Islam thinks, it is what radical Islam thinks. The radicals think that it is their job to either convert or kill. They don’t believe in live and let live. The radicals have taken over the religion and are controling it, it is like the KKK took over Christianity. Moderate Islamist need to let the world know that they condemn terrorism and speak out against the things that are going on in Sudan and other places.

Brilliant, and if we are going to keep looking like a people who detest Islam, if we keep talking about how islam is anti Christianity, if we keep appearing to invade their countries, if we keep supporting countries that they percieve to be anti Islam, how do they let even their own people know, let alone the rest of the world?

At long last you’ve made my point for me, the ONLY road to peace is through dialogue, as I have said on many occasions if you want to defeat your enemy, make him your friend!!! and that is what we should be doing with Islam, not taking every opportunity to decry their beliefs and to denegrate sharia, it’s their law NOT OURS. Finally, your wrong, IT IS what the moderate Islamists think thats important and they will only think what we demonstrate to them. So when we appear to lash out against all Moslems as after 9/11 or the Spanish rail bomb, or back Israel right or wrong irrespective, what reaction do you expect, not lolipops thats for sure. We effectively give the extremists an excuse for their acts and hand them propoganda coups on a plate and tie the hands of those that want peace behind their backs.
