What does it mean to "bless God"?

In reading the scriptures or in trying to understand the words of Jesus, I sometimes come across the situation where a human being is “blessing God.” How can a human ever hope to “bless” Almighty God? We get blessings from our priests which we believe will help open the pathways of grace from God. So, what does it mean for a human to bless God?

The word “bless” has more than one meaning. When we ask God to bless us we are asking Him to bestow His favor upon us. But there are other meanings of the word, according to Oxford Dictionaries:

• (especially in Christian Church services) call (God) holy; praise (God).
• express or feel gratitude to; thank

Origin:

Old English blēdsian, blētsian, based on blōd ‘blood’ (i.e., originally perhaps ‘mark or consecrate with blood’). The meaning was influenced by its being used to translate Latin benedicere ‘to praise, worship’, and later by association with bliss.

When we “bless” God we praise God, give Him thanks, and worship Him.
