Hello,

As a young Catholic, I am constantly trying to learn more and more about my religion. I live in an area very populous with Protestants, and often I get asked about Purgatory. I was reading an article on defending Purgatory and how to explain it to Protestants. I will link it here:

ewtn.com/library/answers/how2purg.htm

The article mentions that one “goes to” or “experiences” purgatory if he or she dies in a state of grace. What is the definition of “dying in a state of grace?”

State of grace means to not be guilty of a mortal sin. A mortal sin cuts off our relationship with God. To die in a state of mortal sin is to enter hell. To die in a state of grace means that we go to Purgatory or Heaven.
