What does it mean to have a personal relationship with God?

It is not “A gift of Mercy”, unless you dig cults
Are you saying God is not mercy? God is to be feared and is ready to create retribution at the drop of a hat on us? As in the Old Testament readings. I don’t understand fully what you mean

These things cannot be generalised. Everyone has different reasons for doing them.

What is in your heart Paspec? Why are you railing against the machine so vocally at the moment? Why do you care what happens?

No, you cannot be in mortal sin for disbelieving in God. If you truly do not believe there is a God, one God, one living God, how can you be in mortal sin?

Now, look at St Paul. He was a pious and law abiding Jew. He was a Pharisee. He thought he was doing God’s work by killing all the Christians and stamping out Christianity.
Then one day on the road, he ran smack into Jesus. Jesus blinded him, told him to go and wait for someone and asked why St Paul was persecuting him through killing all His people.

After St Paul met Jesus, if he had denied Him and disbelieved Him, that would be a mortal sin. Willingly saying I know you now but I deny you.

I still dont understand what you mean by Catholicism causes great harm

Many studies have shown that religious people are both happier and healthier than non-believers. Either the studies are all flawed or there is something going on that does not resemble enslavement.

I don’t love god and in fact have no reason to do so. Was just interest in hearing why some people claim to have a relationship with god.
I was going to encourage you to seek a personal relationship with God by going through his son Jesus, and asking Jesus to help you to deepen your relationship with him. But since you posted this, I can only say that a person needs to desire God, so if you care or ever have any desire for God, you might ask God himself to lead you to him.

A relationship with Jesus is the best thing anyone could ever have. It is worth more than all the riches the world can give and it is very emotionally fulfilling also because God pours his love into our hearts. So if you ever want the greatest gift in the world, all you have to do is ask Jesus for it and you can begin there.

He prolly means it gives people awful complexes of guilt and shame and fear of hell, like the last guy who was raised in some awful restrictive Jansenist-type Catholic family said when he came on this forum trying to save people from the alleged horrors of Catholicism which most of us do not experience.

What happens to you if you willingly miss church on Sunday or you wank?
People have dissented from Catholic teaching for 2000 years. What happens to them is that they face the judgement of God. We stand witness to the laws that guide our spriritual journey. If you willingly miss Mass on Sunday and wank, you face judgement as per the Church’s teaching.

Doesn’t anyone here see, that this topic run off the track many posts before?

Like the here overstressed naturalness to write God and not god, as >god< indicates inexistent pagan gods - while God means the one and only God who created all there is.
As an atheist deliberately spells god instead of God - it’s the atheist’s problem when he sees God after atheists death. He was told - rejects it to deliberately insult God. So what? It’s the atheist’s problem. Not ours. A troll he is.Sure. So why waisting pages of forums space to convince him? He loves it and takes it as sport.
His own name or the name of others he capitalizes. Not so God’s name - which actually is „I am“ and "The I Am spoke to me“ God himself said to Moses he should say.
However. If a pagan insists to remain being a pagan until he sees God - which all will when being judged by Jesus Christ - then let him.
It’s same as when someone refuses to eat and drink.
A almost 90year old very ill lady I recently cared for, did so. I then urged the clinic’s staff not to forcedly feed her (by injections), as she desired to die, to finally be with God. She then died in God peacefully after having received the last rites.
Our troll here though, spoils this thread willingly, by continuously insulting God, imagining God excuses this, as our little troll doesn’t know about the reality of God.
A sadly enough very wrong predominant thought.
Still - all who then are rejected by God because they rejected God, asked for it.

Well, gold old forums-troll spoiled this thread thoroughly - so this thread died ’cos many here fell into the little troll’s trap.

Yours
Bruno

Cuz Catholicism has bee…n doing great harm
Yes, the harm of informing people that there’s actual hope in an otherwise meaningless world. That this world’s not the equivalent of a slaughterhouse, with no existence for humans afterwards. The harm of telling us that love and goodness are ultimately at the foundations of this world, despite how messed up this temporary life may be.

The harm of proclaiming an ideal that led to the building of hospitals, orphanages, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, developing the lower educational and university systems in the west, loving ones enemy rather than conquering him, countless quantities of time and money donated to charitable work, promoting strides in the arts and sciences and the pursuit of something better, higher, and more excellent in general, offering hope to an often very dark world. Arguably putting altruism on the map. All bad stuff.

Precisely this. This is the reality for many, many people. We all experience things in our own way. Being raised in this kind of Catholic family or environment can cause great psychological harm. It isn’t the healthy type of Catholicism those who embrace the religion experience. And yet, it is still Catholicism.

I have read through the entire thread and really appreciate the posts from those who seem to have an understanding of this. For those who don’t, I would encourage them to try to get some. A person who has experienced psychological trauma as a result of experiencing Catholicism in this way doesn’t need to be told about capitalizing “God” or how they are a troll when they spoke in hypotheticals. It is unkind to do that. If you choose to engage, then try your best to be loving and kind. Otherwise, best to remain silent.

Our best comparison is the relationship between a child and a good father. (For those who did not grow up with a good father, this is going to require some imagination).

As an adult, I still trust my earthly father, know that everything he does is with my best interests at heart. I communicate with my father, texts, calls, visits. If I never spoke to my father, anyone would rightly assume that we do not have much of a relationship.

I do things because my father asks them, I don’t question or drill him about things, I simply obey because I trust my father.

I like my father.
